Novices look forward
to fresh start in new year
The Wingham Optimist Novices
dropped two more games last
week, losing 8-3 last Thursday
night in Blyth and 9-0 Saturday
afternoon in Seaforth.
The locals were singing that same
old "rhyme cif '89", that being, an
inab-aiyi_ty- to capitalize capitalize on their scor-
ing
Early in the first period in the
match against Blyth, it appeared
the slump that has plagued the
team since mid-October was wally
coming to an end. The Optimists
began to dominate play early,
resulting in a 1-0 lead on a goal by
Scott McPherson.
Howgver, Blyth responded with
two goals of its own to take a 2-1
lead after one period even though
the Optimists held an edge in shots
on goal of 11-2
Blyth fired four quick, unan-
swered goals to start the second,
taking a 6-1 lead before Wingharn's
Steve Carter found the net on a
pass from Peter Irwin. The score
after two periods was 6-2 for Blyth,
but Wingham again held a large
margin in the shots -on -goal depart-
ment of 9-3.
Blyth took an early 7-2 lead in the
third, then the teams traded goals
in the dying minutes as Carter
notclted ,his second from McPher-
son.. The Optimist Novices left
Blyth on the short end of an 8-3
score, but having outshot their
opponents 29-7.
The trip to Seaforth last Saturday
through some stormy weather con-
ditions was the best partof the day
as the Optimists ran into a real
typhoon inside the arena.
Seaforth totally dominated this
game and ."bad luck" was not a
valid excuse as the locals were
outscored 9-0 and outshot 37-3.
Wingham goaltender Robert War-
wick must have felt a little bit like
the Michelin Man as he was con-
stantly surrounded by flying rub-
ber.
One bright spot was the play of
Phil Deans, who with his size and
excellent shot, did manage to pro-
vide some offence. Again, strong
efforts from Carter and Tyler Huff-
man an were nullified by a very strong
Seaforth squad.
LUELINE NOTES—The team
ys one more home game before
Christmas as it hosts Brussels at the
Lodtidge arena this Saturday, Dec.
23, at 5 p.m. Then the team will
compete in the Regional Silver Stick
Tournament Dec. 27, 28 and 29 at

Indications are that with a strong
effort in games within their group-
ing, the team can and should set its
sights on qualifying for the playoff
round. As well, it is time to begin
making New Yea '$,resolutions and
this dub has a number of things it
might consider. Finally, the players
and families of the Optimist
Novices would Ince to wish a happy
holiday season to all of their friends
and supporters, in particular, the
Wingham Optimist Club, which has
been so supportive to the team.
