Church young people present annual concert The Wingham United Church Sunday School annual Christmas concert was held recently, with pupils from Nursery through Grade 8 participating. Dave Shaw, chairman of the Christian Educa- tion Committee, welcomed every- one to the evening event and announced each number. Anne Spivey played an organ prelude and provided accompaniment for carol singing, as well as for several class presentations. The theme of the concert was "Christmas Through the Years". The Nursery and Kindergarten classes began with "God's Little Angels" and "Away in a Manger". These groups are taught by Helen Skelton, Wendy McBride, Dianne Simpson and Kim Knight. A Grade 1 number entitled "Let's Pretend" followed, with leadership here given by Karen Laidlaw and Christa Crawford. The Grade 2s, taught by Cathy Edgar, Sean Rathburn and Ian Ward, then presented a litany, "Come, Lord as" The Grade 3s told the story of the carol, "Silent Night", through their drama, "Johann's Gift for Christ- mas". According to this account, a mouse had chewed a hole in the bellows of the organ, necessitating the use of a guitar, for which this special carol was written. Maureen OFFICE SUPPLIES ... The audience next got a view of "Christmas in the 1800s" as the members of the Grade 4 class gave their presentation. They are under the direction of Liz Kernaghan, Betty Shaw and Eleanor Wand. The Grade 5s, led by Evonne Carter, gave an animated version of "The Way it Was — or Might Have Been". This was followed by "Christmas in the Future", a num- ber by Grade 6, which two mem- bers wrote themselves. It suggested that by the year 3000, we will be living underground because of extreme pollution of the environ- ment. However, a yearning for a real Christmas tree indicated that by a greater ecological concern, we might yet save the planet. Amber Underwood and Marilyn Wood teach this class. The regular numbers concluded with a play, "The Real Gift", by the Grade 7s, led by Fred Burton and Carol Johnstone. The White Gifts were then presented, with young pupils taking their envelopes to the stage where they placed them in a manger. Grade 8 students collected the remainder of the offering; sever- al mission projects designated by the Sunday School become the recipients of these special givings. A slide and tape presentation by the Grade 8 class, depicting "Christmas During World War II", rounded out the evening. Pictures taken previously showed both overseas and home locations dur- ing that difficult period. Most stu- dents participated by posing for the various roles. Carolyn Elston and Peter Shaw provided the voice nar- ration. Rea Grant and Gary Lisle are the teachers of this class. Following the concert, which was well attended by parents and oth- ers, the children were given a gin- gerbread cookie treat, made by members of Unit '83. Eleanor Ward is currently the coordinator of the Sunday School, while Ann C w - ford provides secretarial and oer assistance.
