SECOND giCTION
'Canine cop' and partner
prove they have right stuff
On the job for only a few weeks,
Provincial Const. Kirk Bannerman
and his dog Kolega have aheady
proven this new police canine team
has the right stuff.
In a 'recent 24-hour period Conn..
Bannerman and Kolega engaged in
-
the kind of action that would be
termed exaggerated if it were
depicted on screen
Between the early hours of Nov.
25 and Nov. 26 they were involved
in two separate tracking cases
whkhsmutted in the apprehension
of two males, one a youth, who
have been charged with break,
enter and theft.
The cases, one occurring in
Arthur, and the other in an area
from Markdale to Flesherton to
near Shelburne, are indicative of
the work of police canine teams
throughout the province.
Stationed at Ontario Provincial
Police District 6 headquarters at
Mount Forest, Const. Bannerman
and Kolega cover an area bounded
by Tobermory, down the Lake
Huron coast to Grand Bend, inland
to Stratford and Cambridge, east of
Guelph, north to just west of
Collingwood and back to Tober-
mory
"We are constantly on the road,"
Const. Bannerman said. "And
besides our own district, we are on
call to go elsewhere upon request."
Shortly after reporting for duty,
Const. Bannerman and Kolega
went to Lion's Head to search for a
lost lumber.
Outside the district, they have
been called to Burlington to assist
in a homicide case.
CHASES
The tracking work involved in
the cases on Nov. 25 and 26. proves
beyond doubt that Kolega, a three-
year-old purebred male German
Shepherd, weighing in at about 35
kg is a force to be reckoned with if
one happens to be on the wrong
side of the Law. -
