Wroxeter delegation
discusses road work
GORRIE—During its Nov. 7
meeting, Howick Township Coun-
cil heard a delegation led by George
Oriold. Mr., Oriold spoke 10' council
regarding the construction of
McLaughlin Street in the Village of
Wroxeter.
In the fall of last year Mt Oriold
approached council for the first
time regarding the construction of
,McLaughlin Street. At the time
council told }rim no money was -
allocated for that street in the 1988
budget, but he should approach
them again in the spring of 1989 to
have his request considered for the
1989 budget.
Road construction at the time
was heavily subsidized by the
province and Mr. Oriold did not
foresee any problems in getting the
road constructed, and subsequently
began selling lots along one side of
the road allowance.
Lots on the other side of
McLaughlin are owned by the
township.
When Mr. Oriold approached
council again in the spring of this
year he was informed the govern-
ment had frozen all subsidies on
road construction prompting coun-
cil to re-examine its position.
Under new regulations the devel-
oper has to construct all roads to
Ministry of Transportation stan-
dards, in order for the township to
take them over once completed.
Only if roads are built to MTO stan-
dards will they qualify for mainte-
nance subsidies.
Under the new tdwnship regula-
tions the onus for constructing
McLaughlin Street falls on Mr. Ori -
old and property owners who pur-
chased the property from him.
The lots can not be used at all, as
builijimg..permits_are_only-issued if
propetactiss to the lidS iffiluestion
is provided. Since that is not the
case without McLaughlin Street the
lots are essentially useless.
Council and Mr. Or dd recd
a letter from Bruce kreller, wr,o
owns two of the lots on McLauglin
Street. His letter adamantiy states
he would like to see the street Con-
structed as quickly as possible.
This letter initiated Mr. Oriold's
recent discussions with council
regarding the western section of
McLaughlin Street. Council said it
was unable and unwilling to put in
the street with township money,
but would consider a compromise
with landowners as the municipali-
ty owns the land on one side of the
street.
Mr. Oriold told this newspaper
he would have never sold the lots
had he known of the changes in
repiations.
"I just hope to come to an agree-
ment with the landowners," he said
"as to what kind of proposal we
can make to finance road construc-
tion."
At the meeting Mr. Oriold sug-
gested council help finance the mad
and althoughat first councillors
were not in favor of that idea, it
was agreed to consider the idea fur-
ther when and if landowners pre-
sent a proposal to council.
Mt. Oriold told this paper he will
try to contact the other owners and
hopes to have a proposal for coun-
cil in the next few weeks.
