Turnberry tells Howick,
'thanks, but no thanks'
Turnberry council has decided to
say "thanks, but no thanks” to
Howick Township's conditional
proposal to accept Turnberry waste
at the Howick clump site.
Members of Turnberry council,
faced with the closure of their land-
fill site sometime in the next several
montfis, met with Howick in late
October to see if that township
could possibly make room at its site
for Turnberry's waste as an
emergency measure.
Howick councilksat down earlier
this month and agreed to take Turn -
berry's waste, if a number of condi-
tions were met — 16 conditions to
be exact.
When members of Turnberry
council considered those conditions
at their second monthly meeting
last week, the general consensus
appeared to be that the Howick
proposal amounted to, "a nice way
Of saying 'no'," in the words of
Turnberry Councillor John ox.
-Even the Lord Hirnself only had

Turnberry Reeve Brian Matirriey.
"These guys have got 16."

were stipulations that Turnbery,

-We could truck it (the township
Waste) to Sarnia cheaper than that,"
said Mr. Cox.
Finally council decided to have
its engineering firm, Maitland Engi-
neering of Wingham, set up a meet-
ing with Ontario Ministry of the
Environment officials, explaining
the township's predicament.
Although the ministry would not
grant emergency approval to
expand the existing Turnberry site
earlier this year, perhaps recent
developments will convince the
MOE to allow Turnberry to expand
its landfill site.
