Last Saturday, the lads played host to Cfifford and on Sunday, Goderich paid a visit to the Lockridge arena. •The Clifford Novices edged the loial club 7-6 in a real seesaw affair Saturday as both teams were play - int their first games oT the season. juLapcut Init., tan Cal ly 14d on goals by Troy Greenley and TCjny Douglas. The teams traded goals in the s ond period as Blake Angst tied it fr Clifford, but Wingham's Jamie pod fired his first of two from 1 -ler Huffman to preserve the %ingham lead after two periods of a4tion. That set the stage for a wild third ppriod as Kent DeBruyn got on t ck and tied the score at 4-4. ingham again jumped ahead as rter picked up a loose puck once nitore and went the distance. Clif- Ord then rebounded to take a 6-5 lead on goals by Greenley and DeBruyn. 'But Wingham ivasted no time !responding to that as Good notchedffman and Jeff his second from Hu Leitch. Sunday's game proved tc!. • 06,4 defensive struggle as the Optimists controlled things in the early going. However, by the midpoint of the game, they had struggled to hang on for a 1-1tie. Wingham took"an early 1-0 lead when Phil Deans parked himself in front of the Goderich net and fin- ished off a fine three-way effort with linemates Good and Huffman. Goderich tied the -score at one in the first mintiteetrthe second peri- od and continued to pressure the locals throughout the remainder of the game. The third period belonged to goaltender Robert Warwick as he made several key saves, while his mates were unable to muster any kind of attack. Warwick did get support from defensemen Carter, Scott Inwood, Jay Leitch and Chris Cameron, but the offense was almost non -ods - tent. Palmerston opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from A. McRae, assisted by B. Bentley. Wingham evenedthe score with 1:45 remaining in the first period with Patterson scoring from Alex- ander. In the second period, Wingham took the lead with asoeby M. Gib- son assisted by J. Kleist and J. Crawford. Wingham added one _ more to end the second with a goal by S. Anger, hssisted by Patterson and Crawford. In the third period Wingham racked up three more goals to end the game 6-1, tallied by B. Coultes; assisted by C. Casemore and G. Kleist, then S. Anger, assist- ed by C. Patterson and S. Daw, then Coulteli from Kleist and Crawford. Ladies' dart team wins at the zone A ladies° dart team representing Branch 180 of the Royal Canadian Legion, Wifigham, captured the zone tournament and trophy last Saturday at Clinton. The team, consisting of Gayle Irvine, Gail Leachman, Janet Hen- derson and Marlene Metcalfe, will compete in April for the district title. Wingham 367-2801 (Across from Post Office) ' r RUNNERS HUDDLE FOR WARMTH—It was cold, damp day last Thursday when the F. E. Madill Secondary School hosted the annual Huron -Perth cross-country meet. Madill hosts the annual WOSSA meet this Friday. Madill boys capture Huron -Perth team title Amid cold temperatures, high winds and snow mixed with rain, 175 cross-country runners made their way over fields and hills last Thursday competing in the annual THoloo4PertirrchalopkWhipT I This year Huron -Perth was held in Wingham with the starting line on the upper field of the F. E. Madill Secondary School. Runners followed paths that took them over fields to bush land, then along the park by the river and back to the high school. Madill runners had one of their strongest showings in recent years, winning two team titles, as well as placing six runners in the top 10 of different divisions. In the Senior boys' 8,000 -metre, Mike Cardy ran an exceptionally sttong race to win second place overall. Teammates Rod Adams, Adam Armstrong and Sandy Anderson were 5th, 8th and llth respectively. Ben Barnes was 23rd, Steve Rin- toul, .25th and Brett Gillespie, 26th. The Senior boys soundly defeated Central Huron and Stratford Cen- tral to clinch first place and the Huron -Perth title for the second straight year. - In the Junior boys° 6.4 -kilometre, Derrick Evers ran one of his best races of the season to take third place overall in a very competitive field. The other Madill runners were Ken Lapp, 21st, Don Pickard, 14th and Kevin Dekker, 15th. The Junior boys were fourth overall. The Midget boys had their best effort so far this season, clinching second place in the team titles in their 5,000m run. Scott Rintoul led the Madill runners with his 8th - place finish. Shane Pegg earned 15th, Mike Smith, 17th, Brad Bow- erman, 24th and -Dwayne Harris, 30th. The Madill Midget, Junior and Senior boys defeated Stratford Cen- tral for the overall boys' tearn title.
