attended the annual conference
held recently In Owen Sound, This
event is hosted each year by one of
the 25 branches in Ontario. This
year's host was. North Grey Junior
WI branch from Owen Sound and
Ma.
JWIO, Provincial President Marg
Greig of the Hawick branch opened
the meeting with remarks pertain-
ing to the provincial theme, "Build-.
ing Together". Mrs. Greig urged the
76 members in attendance to re-
view the goals toward this theme
and project them into the future of
JWIO.
In the financial report, discussion
centred on ideas for fund-raising to
continue support for Ronald Mc-
Donald Houses of Ontario. A com-
mittee was struck to look further
into possible fund-raising projects.
Certificates of Merit are awarded
in recognition of their contribution
to the organization. Each branch is
invited to submit names of mem-
bers who would be worthy recipi-
ents. This year, Howick was proud
to have Darlene Harding as one of
the five members awarded the Cer-
tificate of Merit.
The JWIO Scholarship Award is
presented to a deserving member
who is furthering her education.
This year's recipient is Donna Clark
of the Aberdeen branch (Durham
area).
JWIO is associated with other
organizations, including the Feder-
ated Women's Institutes of Ontario
(FWIO) and the Associated Coun-
try Women of the World (ACWW).
A report from FWIO indicates that
Nov 11 will be the day that JWIO
members will operate the FWIO
display at the Royal Winter Fair. As
well, there are conferences: Jan. 16-
18 in Guelph and June 1-3 in
Ottawa, entitled "Women and the
Environment -- The Challenge Is
Nome: JWIO senior board director
at FWIO will be Leone Foerter of
the Howick branch.
ACWW is an international orga-
nization of Women's Institutes and
other similar organizations, repre-
senting over 9,000,000 women
around the world. The ACWW is in
need of additional funding so a
motion was passed that each
branch will pledge an additional
$50 to Pennies for Friendship, the
annual fund collected for ACWW.
The installation of officers took
place with Mrs. Greig heading the
1989-90 executive. Vice-president is
Cindy Ashton of Village People
branch, north of Oshawa; secretary -
treasurer is Karen Smith of Niagara
and public relations officer is Pat`
Clark of Village People. Howick's
provincial director to the executive
is Jane VanderVelden.
The afternoon program at the
conference featuied D4nIae 'Ed-
wards, a Rural Organizationns.:ape-.
cialist with OMAF, whoconducted
a workshop on social recreatidit;,
with ideas for ice -breakers and
mixer -type activities, Marguerite
Oberle, a public health nurse, spoke
about communicating with the fam-
ily about AIDS.
Guest speaker was Dr. Fred Mil-
ler, a minister and family counsel-
lor. He expressed some lively, ideas
on the importance of communicat-
ing with family members by
putting oneself in their place (or
space).
Howick members attending were
Marg Greig, Winnie Winkel, Henri-
etta Claus, Carole Hohenadel, Dar-
lene Harding, Myrna Penney, Con-
nie Fenton, Leone Foerter, Helen
Smith, Jane VanderVelden, Kate
Tervit, Mary Hall, Catherine Stew-
art, Ronna Lee Johnson and Linda
Fox.

Mr. and Mrs. Merle Weber of
Kimberley and Mrs. Carol Mann
enjoyed a bus trip to New York.
Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Mundell vis-
ited Wednesday at the homes of
Mrs. James Smith and Rev. and
Mrs. William A. Henderson of Luc -
know.
A number of senior citizens were
on the Beaver Valley bus tour on
Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Weir of
Welland; Mrs. George Gibson of
Wingham; Mrs. Evelyn Wilson of
Fordwich and Mrs. Nellie Taylor
visited Saturday with Miss Mar-
garet Dane and Mrs. Lillian Walker.
Wes Callaway and Glenn Under-
wood have returned from a hunting
trip in Northern Ontario. i ;
Mr. and Mrs. Duff Bell of Dray-
ton visited Sunday at the home of
Mrs. Nellie Taylor.
Mrs. John Van de Kemp under-
went surgery in Wingham and --
District Hospital.
Mrs. Florence Currah flew to
Sydney, Nova Scotia, and attended
the 40th wedding anniversary cele-
bration of Lloyd and Anne Taylor
held there. The ladies are sisters.
Mrs. Currah spent the week at the
homes of her sister and brother-in-
law, Ruth and Ralph Kaiser and her
brother, Murdoch Rotterham, all of
Sydney,
Mrs. Norman Mulloy, Kristie and
Leslie of Paris, spent the weekend
with Mr. and Mrs. George Brown
and attended the United Church
anniversary on Sunday.
The Gorrie Women's Institute
toured Royal Homes, Wingham, on
Thursday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. James Errington of
Dungannon visited Wednesday at
the home of Mrs. Cecil Grainger.
Mr. and Mrs. William Bennett
visited Sunday at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Bradley Galbraith, RR 3,
Wingham.
Mr. and Mrs. Perry Strong and
Greg, RR 1, Corrie; Mr. and Mrs.
Kevin Gibson and baby Colin of
. Bluevale, spent Sunday with Mr.
and Mrs. Peter Browne. Mrs. Freda
D'Arcey, Listowel and Mrs. Marian
Kirby of Fordwich visited Tuesday
night at the same home.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman Johns of
London spent the weekend with
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Nay.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stewart and
grandchildren, Crystal and Justin
Stewart; Mr. and Mrs. Len Hunter
of Whitechurch and Bruce Good-
win of Kitchener attended the grad-
uation of Kevin and Mandy Stewart
as officers of the Air Cadets at CFB,
Wollesley Barracks, London, on
Sunday. Congratulations, Kevin
and Mandy!
Ron and Tania Hall of Burford
visited Sunday with the former's
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford
Pyke and spent the weekend with
other relatives.
Mrs. Ethel Dennis visited in Ailsa
Craig with her sister, Mrs. Olive
Currie and they attended the funer-
al of their brother-in-law, William
Daniel, at the Stephenson Funeral
Home, Ailsa Craig. Burial followed
at Poplar Hill Baptist Cemetery. Mr.
Daniel is survived by his wife, the
former Elsie Wardell, two sons and
a daughter, as well as six grandchil-
dren. Mrs. Dennis was accompa-
nied by her daughter, Mrs. Frances
Lewis of Kitchener.
Visitors on Thursday evening at
the home of Rev. and Mrs. Jeff
Hawkins were Jim and Marian
Schefter; Lorne and Reta Mann; Bill
and Erland Thornton; Ralph and
Lois Lee; Florence i3olander; Ray
and Jackie Gowdy; Wayne and
Catherine Stewart and Norman and
Edna Fairies.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ferguson
spent the weekend with their
cousins, Rev. and Mrs. Ken Fergu-
son, near Meaford and also visited
Mrs. Margaret Weitz.
Mr. and Mrs. Angus Gingrich of
Cambridge (P) are spending a week
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robin
Bolander.
