County chief librarian is
Institute guest speaker
FORDWICH—The Fordwich
Women's Institute met in the hall
last Wednesday night. The presi-
dent, Mrs. Elmer Harding, presided
and welcomed everyone. The roll
call was answered by 16 members
and one visitor by naming a book
you have read and why you
enjoyed it.
The devotions were taken by
Mrs. Bill Sothern and M. Leo Rut -
tan, who presented the motto, "If
we do not plant knowledge when
we are young, it will give us no
shade when we are old."
A thank -you note was read from
Jodi Potts, the Institute's fair queen
contestant and several items of
business were discussed.
In honor of Public Library Week,
the guest speaker was Beth Ross„
chief librarian of the Huron County
Library system, Goderich. She pro-
vided many interesting comments

on our local libraries, saying that
books are supplied and changed
every three months and the library
tries to get children interested in
books at an early age. This helps
them very much through their
school years.
Huron County owns over 200,000
books, Ms. Ross said, adding that
5,000 books were borrowed from
the Fordwich library last ye,r.
There also are "talking" boas
which are available to ,people with
disabilities. These have proved very
helpful and enjoyable, she said.
Ms. Ross was thanked by Mrs.
Jean Clarkson.
Mrs. Betty Gibson gave an inter-
esting report on the Huron County
rally held Oct. 2 at which the war-
den was guest speaker. Mrs. Hard-
ing will be the delegate to attend
the Guelph area convention. It also
was announced that there will be a
card party in the hall this Friday
night, Oct. 27.
The meeting closed with the
Mary Stewart Collect and lunc
was served by Leone Carswell,
Joyce Lockie, Jean Clarkson and
Donna King.

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Douglas, Paul
Douglas and Mr. and Mrs. Greg
Douglas of Kitchener, as well of
Gary Douglas of Tottenham were
visitors last weekend at Sarnia. On
Oct. 14, they were guests at the
wedding of Jill Johnston and. Kraig
Howie at St. Luke's Church and the
reception which followed at Eagle's
Hall. Other friends attending were
Mr. and Mrs. Ron McClement and
Tom and Mr. and Mrs. Bill
McCutcheon.

UCW unit
meets at
Fordwich
FORDW1C1-1—The afternoon unit
of the United Church Women met
in the church school rooms, with
unit leader Mrs. Scott Clarkson wel-
coming everyone and opening the
meeting with a poem. Minutes
were read by Mrs. Leo Ruttan and
roll call, "Blessings", was answered
by 19 members. Mrs. George.
Richards gave the treasurer's.

Mrs. Bruce Kennedy opened the
worship service with a reading
entitled "Today's Blessings". Fol-
lowing a hymn, Mrs. Pittendreigh
read Psalm 100. Mrs. Richards and
Miss Minnie McElwain sang a duet,
"Count Your Blessings", with
everyone joining in the chorus,
accompanied by Mrs. Russell Nick-
el at the piano.
Mrs. Harold Gibson and Mrs.
Nickel presented the program on
the Beatitudes from the Sermon on
the Mount. A question -and -answer
period followed the singing of a
hymn and Mrs. Gibson led in
prayer. The meeting closed with all
repeating the Mizpah benediction.
Seniors host
thirteen tables
of card players
FORDWICH—The senior citizens
held their second card party of the
fall Season on Friday night, Oct 13,
with 13 tables in play.
• Winners of high prizes were
Hazel Hammond and Peter
Browne; consolation winners were
Alice Stevens and Jean Sothern.
Special prizes went to Bernice Mar-
riner and Evelyn Wilson.
'The next card party will be held
Friday, Oct. 27, sponsored by the
Fordwit'h Women's Institute.
Everyone is welcome and lunch is
provided.
