Ontario 1e89 THE FIRST WINGHAM SCOUTS held their annual Apple Day last Saturday in town. Dennis Knox and his little daughter Jeanette of Minnie Street purchased an apple from Jeremy and John'13ar- bout, .at-prop:0$0 A group of approximately 20 county council members toured sites for the proposed Huronview North satellite nursing home last Thursday, including two just out- side Wingham in Turnberry Town- ship. The county councillors also looked at a site in. Brussels, as well as the Morris Township site which has been recommended by the site - selection committee for the 81 -bed nursing home. The Wingham-area sites both are located on the Bill Willis farm just east of Wingham. One is situated near the Canadian National rail line behind the. F. E. Madill Secondary School and the other is near Sacred Heart School. At the October meeting of county council, members agreed to defer the recommendation of the site - selection committee until a tour could be made of the various sites. In a telephone interview follow- ing last week's tour, Huron Clerk - Administrator Bill Hanly said a selection for the satellite home will be made at the November session. County council members still must deal with the deferred motion of the Huronview committee, which recommends the Morris site, said Mr. Hanly., That motion must first be defeated, he adds, before a Wingham site can be considered. A letter from Linda Girard Of the London office of the Ontario Min- istry of Community and Social Ser- vices was read •at the October meet- ing of county council. In that letter, Ms. Girard said the best site is located near Brussels in Morris Township. Last week, Mr. Hanly received a letter of clarification from Frank Capitano, area manager of the Lon- don ministry office. In his letter of Oct. 11, Mr. Capi- tano writes; "I understand that there may be some confusion with respect to the recommendations regarding the three suitable pro- posed sites for the northern location of Huronview." • Ms. Girard's opinion that the Morris site is the best for the satel- lite home was based "on her per- sonal opinion. This opinion was given to be helpful and in no way was intended to pre -judge Coun- cil's debate and final selection of sites." Reiterating the ministry's posi- tion on site selection, Mr. Capitano said, "It iS the role of the members of County Council to make that decision (cm- siteselection) and, then, to advise the Ministry of their choice for the final approval ef the Ministry." The ministry contributes toward capital and operating 'expenditures of nursing homes. At the October meetingag ;Minty council, Bill Mickle and Logsy, „ Fuller of Exeter presented a criteria list for nursing home site selection. Although the criteria list was not adopted by'county council, Mem- bers of the Turnberry-Wingham Committee for Huronview North; the group lobbying to see the satel- lite nursing home located here, has replied because of the amount Of time and effort which had gone into drawing up the criteria list. The reply to the Mickle-Fuller cri- teria list in many ways echoes the data submitted in the Turnberry- Wingham committee's consultant's report entitled "Huronview North ... The Natural Choice". 'However, there are some additional areas Cov- ered. Under health Services, the report notes that the Wingham-area site Is within two blocks and 10 Minuted maxirium reponse and returit time - to Wingham and DilifiCt Hospital "Response time' for emergency Vet hides to site proposed by other Committees is a MINIMUM of 411 minutes in ideal weather Condi- tions."
