Janice Mann is crowned
queen of 130th fall fair
HOWICK—A large crowd was in
attendance at the Howick Commu-
nity Centre on Saturday night when
Janice Mann, 18, of Corrie was
crowned queen of the 130th How-
ick-Turnberry Fall Fair. She re-
ceived her crown from the 1988-89
queen, Linda Wilson.
Ms. Mann, daughter of Ron and
Carol Mann will reign over the fair
which opens next Friday night.
Runner-up in the competition
was Jana Sue McKague, 18, of Bel -
more. She is the daughter of Jim
and Lana McKague.
The award of Miss Congeniality
went to Sara Woodley, of RR 1,
Wroxeter, daughter of Bill and Bev
Woodley.
Ms. Mann captured the crown
over a total of six contestants who
included: Kim Alexander, 17, RR 1,
Fordwich, daughter of Pete and
Mary Alexander; Debbie Edgar, 17,
of Wroxeter, daughter of Cam and
Carol Edgar; Tracy Hargrave, 17,
RR 1, Fordwich, daughter of Lis
and Doug Hargrave and Jodi Potts,
18, RR 2, Harriston, daughter of
Jerry and Marilyn Potts.
Judges for the competition were
John_ and Irene Richardson and Don
and Eva Lamond of St. Marys.
The contest included a prepared
speech by each girl, plus an im-
promptu question. Personal inter-
views preceded the speeches.
The opening ceremonies of the
130th Howick-Turnberry Fall Fair
will commence at 8 p.m. on Oct. 6
followed by a pork auction at 9
p.m.
Fair board president Ron Doug-
las announced that past presidents
of the board and.former fair queens
have been invited to attend the fes-
tivities.
The night also includes a pub
night sponsored by the Howick
Optimists and featuring the music
of Crippled Duck.
On Oct. 7, fair activities for
young andold will continue
throughout the day.
Optimists games, midway, school
fair exhibits, 4-H displays, crop
judging and a host of other events
will be ongoing.
The fair will end Saturday eve-
ning with a dance on the arena
floor with music provided by Any-
thing Goes.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Gowdy have
returned from a visit with Gilmer
cousins in Edmonton where they
met Mr. and Mrs. Bill King of Brus-
sels and Mrs. Everett Cathers of
Wroxeter. The group visited their
aunt, Mrs. Della Gilmer of West -
lock, Alberta. Mrs. Marie Douglas
of Atwood accompanied Bill and
Joanne and visited their cousins,
Bert and Helen Henderson of
Edmonton.
Jim and Marion Schefter and
Gordon and Leone Raster of Wrox-
eter spent the weekend at Franken-
Muth, Michigan.
Rev. Jeff Hawkins of Gorrie Unit-
ed Church conducted a worship
service at the Fordwich Village
Nursing Home on Sunday after-
noon.
Mr. and Mrs. Earle King of Har-
riston attended the Knox Presbyte-
rian Church anniversary service on
Sunday and visited after with Mrs.
Isabel Adams.
Glen Taylor and Lisa Robertson
of Toronto visited recently with .aa.
and Mrs. Edgar Dane.
Mrs. Cecil Grainger spent the
weekend at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Grainger, David and
Steven of Waterloo and all visited
Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Wayne
Williams, RR 1, Listowel. Mr. and
Mrs. Alvin Grainger, RR 2, Wrox-
eter and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce
Williams of Listowel also helped
celebrate Toralyn's and Drew's
birthdays.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Hogg and
Mr. and Mrs. Eldred Cathers were
guests at the wedding of Barry
Hogg and Carole Kendrew in
Teeswater United Church on Satur-
day and also attended the reception
in the Canadian Legion Hall in
Wingham.
Miss Oris Aldrich of Burnaby,
B.C., and Mrs. Rose Aldrich and
Ken of London visited Tuesday at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford
Cooke.
Mrs`. Alvin Mundell attended
Open House at the Lucknow Public
School on Wednesday evening.
Melissa and Michael Noble, Mark
and Krista Fudger and Beth Ann
Lee attended Katrina Kaufman's
birthday party at the home of her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kaufman
of Whitechurch, on Sunday after-
noon.

wins UNO prize
at Games Night
GORRIE—Lloyd Faust was the
UNO winner when Group II of the
Come Alive Club hosted the first
Games Night of the fall season on
Sept. 26.
Cynthia Van Pelt presented Mr.
Faust's prize and those won by
euchre players, Grace Brown,
Annie Simmons, Bob Elschner and
Allan Hyndman.
The seniors will meet again on
Oct. 10 and the next Games Night
will be Oct. 24.

exchanged at St. Andrew's

Wingham and Fred Franz Stabgen,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Stangen
of Listowel, were joined in mar-
riage Aug. 5 at seven o'clock at St.
Andrew's Presbyterian Church,
Wingham.
The bride wore a white satin
gown with puffed sleeves and
round neckline. Lace and pearls
decorated her dress and a spray of
pearls held her floor -length veil.
She carried a bouquet of small
white and violet orchids surround-
ing two large white orchids.
The matrons of honor were the
bride's two sisters, Mrs. Mary Anne
Thompson and Mrs. Cathy Fischer.
Bridesmaids were Mrs. Barb Purdy,
cousin of the bride and Teresa Van
Lammeron, friend of the bride.
Amanda Fischer, niece of the bride,
was junior bridesmaid. They all
wore street -length violet dresses
with violet satin sashes and full
jackets. They carried fans decorated
with mauve and pink flowers and
green ivy.
The best man was Mike Stangen,
brother of the groom and ushers
were Robert McKenzie, brother of
the bride; Tom Thompson, brother-
in-law of the bride; Bruce Norman,

piece mauve dress with a corsage of
violet roses. The groom's mother
wore a white and black polka-dot
dress with red accessories and a red
rose corsage.

Alma Hetherington, Mrs. Jean
Edgar and Mr. ap.d Mrs. Herman
Van Pelt were guests at the Hogg-
Kendrew wedding on Saturday in
Teeswater United Church and

Hall.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Cooke
spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs.
Alan Steedman of Mississauga and
also attended the Blue Jays -Boston
baseball game at the SkyDome in
Toronto.
Mrs. Ethel Dennis spent a day
recently in Ailsa Craig with her sis-
ters, Mrs. William Daniel of Den-
field, Mrs. Grace Sexton of
Strathroy and Mrs. Olive Currie of
Ailsa Craig. Mrs. Dennis was
accompanied by her daughter, Mrs.
Hugh Hart of Gadshill.
