Province, DU
complete project
The first Ducks Unlimited Cana-
da conservation project ever under-
taken in an Ontario Provindal Park
was officially dedicated last Thurs-
day, Sept. 14, at,, MacGregor Point
Provincial Park on the east shore of
Lake Huron.
In a special ceremony, the
province, Wildlife Habitat Canada
(WHC) and Ducks Unlimited
unveiled a bronze plaque to com-
memorate the three -party coopera-
tion in financing and building the
waterfowl and wildlife wetland
conservation project.
Located 50 kilometres southwest
of Owen Sound, the $95,000, 67 -
acre marsh development was a low
and wet forested swamp in the
southwestern corner of MacGregor
Park before beavers turned the area
into a semi -open marsh.
Beaver abandonment in recent
years and resulting fluctuations in
water levels have drastically
reduced the waterfowl and wildlife
capacity of the site.
Ducks Unlimited efforts to secure
and enhance the wetland included
the construction of dikes and water
control, works to permit water level
management. Revenue for the pro-
ject was generated from DU sales of
more than 500 WHC conservation
prints of a George McLean painting
entitled "On the Wing — Canada

ly disease which is contracted
through contact with body fluids,
blood in particular.
The vaccine, which is not covered
under the Ontario Hospital Insur-
ance Plan, costs $150 per person,
but is "a small price to pay when
you weigh it against what the result
of the disease could be," says Com-
missioner Doug McBurney.
The Atlanta Centre for Disease
Control has placed police officers
among the high-risk professions for
contracting Hepatitis 'B', adding
that it is 15 times more common
than AIDS.
If a police officer were called to
the scene of an accident, said Mr.
McBurney, and he were to cut his
arm on a piece of glass or steel,
then came in contact with an infect-
ed person's blood, conceivably the
officer could develop the disease.
Mr. McBurney said some people
have built up a natural immunity to
the disease. Therefore, officers
could be tested first to see if they
need the vaccine.
"We have a responsibility for the
health of our employees," said
Commissioner Fred McGee, who
suggested that the vaccination
become department policy
However, it was decided that it
be left up to the individual officers
whether or not to take the vaccina-
tion.
The long-term consequences of
Hepatitis B include cirrhosis (scar-
ring of the liver) and liver cancer.
