Squirts eliminate
Wiarton in WOAA
Last Thursday, the Wingham
Riverview Drive -In Squirts trav-
elled to Wiarton and beat the locals
7-2 to win the WOAA series three
games to one.
Wingham now advances to play
Mitchell for the WOAA Squirt
major championship.
ShaWn Fair opened the game
with a double to left field. He
moved to third on Joel Pegg's
ground -out and then scored on a
wild pitch.
Wingham scored four more runs
in the second as Trevor Machan
slapped a single and Neil Mowbray
and Craig Baynton each reached
first on a fielder's choice. Mark Gib-
son drew a walk and Josh Johnston
punched a key single.
Wiarton rebounded in the bottom
of the second with three singles and
a walk, but were able to cash in on
only one run, leaving the bases
loaded.
Wingham added another run in
the fourth when Baynton rapped an
opposite field triple and scored on
an error made on Gibson's ground
ball to the infield.
Wiarton its second run in the fifth
on a hard hit ball to left field that
took a high hop past the Wingham
fielder and rolled to the fence
allowing the batter to touch all the
bases and score.
Jeremy Creeden ripped a single
for Wingham in the seventh. He
moved to second on a passed ball
and then scored Wingham's final
run when Travis Baler cracked a
double.
Gibson went the distance to col-
lect the win. He scattered seven
hits, walked seven and struck out
eight.
Wingham connected for eight
hits in the victory and rebounded
after an error -filled game against
Goderich earlier in the week to play
well defensively.
Saturday horseshoes
attracts many players
Single -round games of 50 points"
were played last Saturday at the
Wingham Sportsmen's Club horse-
shoe tournament.
Ivan Gardner of Wingham and
Lavern Hoegy of Dublin were first
at six wins and a plus of 37, while
Harold Carter of Goderich and Paul
McKee, Belgrave, were second with
five wins and a plus of 75.
Bob Saunders and Arden Edmon-
son, Arthur, were third, four wins
and a plus of 125; Dave Ablett,
Wingham and Fred Wickens, Kitch-
ener, were fourth at four wins and a
plus of 85 and Ivan . Rivett of
Goderich and Leon Russell, Wing -
ham, were fifth at three wins and a
plus of 161.
Eugene Kuntz of Walkerton and
Lorne Hamilton of Wingham were
sixth at three wins and a plus of
131. Alex Boa of Goderich and
Harold Cassidy, Walkerton, were
seventh at two wins and a plus of
206 and Lorne 'Kuntz of Chepstow
and Tim O'Donnell of Arthur
rounded out the scoring in eighth
place at one win and a plus of 170.
The next tournament is Saturday,
Sept. 23, at 1 p.m.

Wroxeter mighty Mites
take 'A' championshi
After an undefeated record in 12 -
game seasonal play, the 1989 Wrox-
eter Mites took the league tourna-
ment in three games last week in
Belgrave.
The mighty mites downed Bel -
grave 22-0, then eliminated Listow-
el in a 6-1 decision and Blyth in a 9 -

games in the tournament, allowing
only one run.
Trevor Seip hit a total of six
homers in tournament play.
This year's team consisted of

Ron Riley, Tom and Audrey O'Kraf-
ka were proud of their team's
efforts this season.
The team also thanks the coaches
for donating their time and effort,
and ball knowledge they gave to -
the boys this season.

The Shoppers' Drug Mart -
sponsored Bluevale Bares ladies'
team had a great season, except for
last Tuesday night in Bluevale
when the fans watched their team
give it all up to Brown's Buddies.
The Buddies got seven runs in
the second and seven more big runs
in the seventh to put the Bares
down by a count of 15-2.
The Bares finished the regular
season in third place out of 10
teams. Bluevale gave Brown's Bud-
dies an excellent playoff series,
aside from the final match -up when
the Bares seemed ready for the sea-
son to end.
The Bares thank their supporters
and hope to see everyone again
next year.

Smokies win
fourth tourney
The Wingham Smokies took part
in the eighth annual Winthrop
slow -pitch tournament on the
Labor Day weekend, emerging as
tournament champions.
After losing 9-7 to the Godcrich
Cuplers, the Smokies downed the
Monkton BBs 14-7. Homerun hit-
ters in those games were Les Tervitt
and Jeff Walden with two each and
Jim Dore with two, including a
grand slam.
On Sunday, the Smokies fell
behind 4-0 in the first inning
against Listowel, but then came
back to score the winning run in the
last inning and nip their opponents
5-4.
In the championship match,
Stratford was leading 4-2 when Ed
Daer tied the game in the fifth
inning with a two -run homerun.
The Smokies scored four runs in the
top of seventh as well.
The Stratford players, who had
hit 10 homeruns in their previous
game, came up with their second of
the match, but lost 8-6, thus giving
Wingham the championship.
This is the fourth tournament vic-
tory for the Smokies in five outings
this year.
Playing in the Labor Day tourney
for Wingham were: Bob Foxton,
Phil Beard, Greg King, Dennis

Lawn bowlers
hold final
season tourney
The final tournament of the lawn
bowling season was held last Satur-
day, Sept. 9, at the Wingham Bowl -
ng Green. Sixteen rinks participat-
ed.
The final results are: first, Jack
Fisher, Lucknow, three wins, 48;
second, Jack Treleaven, Lucknow,
three wins, 43 and a plus of three;
third, Joe List, Port Elgin, three
wins, 40; fourth, Reg Robinson of
Mitchell, two wins, 47 and a plus of
seven and fifth, Les Douglas of
Brussels, two wins, 44 and a plus of
six.
The consolation was won by Jack
McDonald of Lucknow with a final
game win of 16.
SPORTSMEN'S
HORSESHOES
Harold Carter and Mason Robin-
son took top spot in horseshoe play
last Thursday evening at the Wing -
ham Sportsmen's Club with four
wins and a plus of 24.
Leon Russell and Lorne Kuntz
were second at three wins and a
plus of 56, Ivan Gardner and Jim
Rivett, third, three wins and a plus
of 35, while Ivan Rivett and Dave
Ablett were fourth, two wins and a
plus of 77.
