After downing Wiarton 7-0 in the first game of the best three -out -of - five series, Wingham lost a 2-1 squeaker, but then rebounded to win another tight one by an 8-7 score. In the 2-1 contest, Wingham opened the scoring as lead-off bat- ter Josh Johnston stroked a single and moved to second on) Trevor Machan's sacrifice bunt. Jeremy Creeden then singled to cash in Johnston. Wiarton tied the game in the fifth on a single, a passed ball and a wild throw to third base. They won it in the sixth on three singles as pitcher Jason Brereton crossed the plate. Brereton scattered five hits, struck out seven and issued one walk. Mark Gibson took the tough loss for Wingham, giving up only five hits while striking out nine and walking two. For Wingham, Creeden had three singles, while Chris Alexander and Johnston each stroked one. The next game was a gift from above, as rain and lightning threat- ened to end the game after the fifth inning with Wiarton leading 6-4. However, the storm stayed away from the ball park and gave Wing - ham an opportunity for a come- back. Wiarton added arun in the sixth for a 7-4 lead. Wingham plated four runs in the seventh for the victory. Johnston started things wit!i a shot to the third baseman that was mishan- dled. Joel Pegg and Creeden each drew walks and then Travis Baier lined a drive off the right fiehle; s glove. He ended up on third and represented the winning run. Machan then slapped a triple to left field to register the running RBL For Wingham, Johnston had a single, reached base twice on errors and scored two runs. Creeden had. a triple, a single and two walks and also scored three runs. Pegg had a walk and a single and scored twice. Pegg picked up the win, allowing nine hits while striking out six and walking two. Wingham's usually - steady. defence committed six errors.' After shutting down Goderich in the top of the first, Wingham opened the scoring in their half as lead-off batter Shawn Fair ripped a single and moved to second on Johnston's sacrifice bunt. The right -Reader then dropped Pegg's fly ball, which allowed Fair to score. In the third, Gibson singled and then Evan Poll hit into a fielder's choice to move Gibson to second, who then scored on Johnston's sin- gle. Goderich rebounded to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a walk, two singles and a double. On Monday night in Bluevale, the Bares were down seven runs until the third inning when they desperately tried to over -power the Buddies, but only got three runs in and three more in the sixth to end the match at 8-6. In Trowbridge last Thursday night, the Bares kept the game close throughout. The Bares' first two , batters scored and the team tried to keep on top- of the Buddies. How- ever, Brown's came back as strong as ever with two homeruns and girls on base both times, • The Bares played some great -ball, but couldn't capitalize on the girls left on base — too little too late. The Thursday match -up ended at 6-4. The next playoff match is tonight, Tuesday, at 8:30 in Bluevale.
