We moved to Wingham in 1953 where my late husband worked for many years as a conservation offi- cer. My son now lives in British Columbia. These days I find myself thinking about those early days of the war. Today's events give me a strong sense of "deja vu", especially developments in Poland, which seem to have come full -circle. Modern-day governments should remember that appeasement does not work and however nice Mr. Gorbachev may appear — don't forget what is behind him.
