GIRLHOOD HOME—Margret Wormworth of Wingham was raised in this stately Edwardian
home on Cator Road in London. During "The Blitz", a land mine tore the top storey off the family
home. Amazingly, no one was seriously injured, (Photo courtesy of Margaret Wormworth)
Wingham woman recalls first days

dian servicemen, I agreed.
One of the Canadians was a
dashing young soldier named Ross
Wormworth. We were married and
our son Ted was born before my
husband went to Sicily during the
Allied push into Europe neal. the
end of the war.
In 1945, we sailed for Canada
and my new home. We arrived to
learn that the war was over. I
wished that I was at home in Lon -
don, taking part in the celebration,
especially when my sister told me
she thought the whole world was
in Trafalgar Square.
We moved to Wingham in 1953
where my late husband worked for
many years as a conservation offi-
cer. My son now lives in British
Columbia.
These days I find myself thinking
about those early days of the war.
Today's events give me a strong
sense of "deja vu", especially
developments in Poland, which
seem to have come full -circle.
Modern-day governments
should remember that appeasement
does not work and however nice
Mr. Gorbachev may appear —
don't forget what is behind him.
