Sakasov gains experience
at the Canada Games
The most prestigious event of
amateur sport in our country - the
Canada Gaines - is now history
and a young Wingham woman was
part of it.
Anna Sakasov of Wingham was
one of Canada's best young athletes
who competed at the games from
Aug. 13 to 26 in 16 Olympic sports.
The athletes are all aged 23 and
under.
Saskatchewan offered warm hos-
pitality, first-class facilities and
exemplary organization, while the
local and national media provided
generous coverage.
The scope -of the event was much
broader than just athletic excellence
and fair play. The games were a
forum of national togetherness
which blended in one athletes, offi-
cials, volunteers and spectators
from all corners of Canada.
Sakasov, 18, took part in the
games representing Ontario in the
discus throw. She placed in the
middle of a field of 20. Her practice
throws easily covered the bronze -
medal range.
However, duriung, the competition
she went all out, which resulted in
her first two throws landing out of
the sector. On her last qualifying try
she was nervous and too cautious
and registered a distance that came
just short of giving her three more
throws.
Even though disappointeir Wjth
her placement; Pak4env will
tra-
sure many happy rripmoripa rfii)nt
this unique national eicperience.
