BRUSSELS—Mrs. Winona Martin
and her daughter, Mrs. Gwen-
dolyne Tooth of Toronto, have
. returned from a 23 -day tour of Lon-
don, England, France, Belgium, The
Netherlands, East and West Ger-
many, Poland, Russia, Finland,
Sweden and Denmark. There were
two overnight cruises from Finland
to Denmark on the Baltic Sea; and
from Hamburg, Germany, to Har -
wick, England, on the North Sea,
which was very rough this year.
There were ferry crossings from
Dover to Calais and Sweden to
Denmark.
The farmers use small machinery
and are out -dated in their farming
methods. The cities are full of
tourists. Communism is prevalent;
however, in Russia, the Protestant
religion is moving ahead but is
much in need of Bibles which are
very costly there.
Money is different in each coun-
try and one cannot exchange coins.
Food varies, from the very greasy
to the luscious food of Scandinavia,
The buildings are beautiful, mostly
reconstructed because of World
War iI. Many places were 70-90 per
cent bombed.
There were 49 persons on the
tour, plus a driver and a hostess.
The bus was new, equipped with
air conditioning, coffee, cold drinks,
mineral water and a small bath-
room.
Many things will have to
improve greatly, as the countries
are opening up to the catering of
the tourist industry and the
younger generation is aware of bet-
ter standards.
