Energy Minister Bob Wong
announced in the Legislature that
the first regulations under the Ener-
gy Efficiency Act have been passed.
They establish minimum efficien-
cy levels for six electrical appliance
groups including: ranges, clothes
washers and dryers, dishwashers,
ground source heat pumps and
water heaters.
Mr. Wong said these regulations
reflect the government's commit-
ment to make Ontario one of the
most energy-efficient places in the
world.
"Energy demand management,
through conservation and energy
efficiency, is our number one priori-
ty. By using energy more wisely, we
can help to protect our environ-
ment and strengthen our economy,"
Mr. Wong said.
He added, "These regulations
and those that follow, will ensure
that Ontario consumers have access
to energy-efficient appliances,
which will, in the long term, reduce
their energy bills."
The regulations for water heaters
come into effect on October 1, 1989.
The other five appliances must
comply with the news standards by
Jan. 1, 1990.
Performance standards are now
being developed for refrigerators,
freezers, and gas boilers and should
be ready this fall. Standards for
other appliances will follow in
1990.
It is anticipated that once these
regulations are in place, energy sav-
ings will be considerable.
For example, heat loss from
water heaters built to comply with
the new standards is 20 per cent
less than from heaters sold today.
Thus, it will require 20 per cent less
electricity to keep water hot.
The use of these water heaters
alone could result in an energy sav-
ing for the province of 35 million
kilowatt hours in the year 1990, and
a yearly saving of 180 million a year
at today's electricity prices.
The Energy Efficiency Act, Bill
82, was passed unanimously in
June 1988.
The Energy Efficiency Act is the
first legislation of its kind in Cana-
da and establishes Ontario as a
leader in the energy efficiency field.
