Gr G r ;g up on a farm can be a wonderful experienc , says
the L ; ow Sentinel. The limitless opportunities fay,
advert'e and exploration make a farm yard a haveniplay,

dren.
But it can also be a place of unseen and unexpected dan-
ger.
As any farmer knows, agricultural ,equipment, chemicals:
and live -:stock are not playthings. They are tools, not toys.,
Each year many young lives are :lost and many ~more injuries
occur because of farm accidents.
In 1 7 alone, 22 children died on Canadian farms as a
direct result of agricultural accidents and the sad fact is --
most of -these tragic deaths could have been avoided if the
four Es to child safety had been enforced.
Th100 Farm Safety Week — a good time to review your
operatfon, ensure Its safe and to look closely at the four Es:
Elimin a the hazards; Educate the children ;on how: to
behave ,around machinery and livestock;. Enforce safety rules

The,theme of this year's Farm Safety Week, sponsored by
the C,aoada Safety Council, in cooperation with Agriculture
Canada,, is, "Children on the Farm, Keeping 'Them Safe".
The airs to make adults avvare that it is their responsibility
to make the farm a safe environment for children.
