On a good day at the height of strawberry season, Dewey will See about 45 pickers bending over the plant rows. He feels prettrgood about it. "I like to see the berries picked and put to use." - A. retired chicken producer, Dewey has lived on Howick's 6th Concession near Conte for 15 years. About six years ago he rent- ed an acre from the neighboring farm and started a small strawberry patch. "It was something for me to do," he recalls. Later he expanded the patch, and this year he has added yet another section of young plants to increase next summer's yield. Dewey has two main varieties: Vee -star and Red Coat. Both are good bensies for freezing, jam -making, or just plain eating. He recommends picking them with the hulls on. Not only will they keep better in the refrigerator, but it's a lot easier to hull thei. standing up in _the kitchen than stooping in the strawberry patch. Everyone enjoyed the delicious noon- meal with fresh strawberry pie for dessert. We spent the afternoon throwing horseshoes and Water balloons and Atamr.v..v playing other outdoor games. After a refreshment break of lemonade and watermelon, we packed up and headed back to the centre. Last Tuesday we spent the day at the Huron Day Centre. We enjoyed the entertainment in the afternoon as we danced and listened to the music provided by the Huron Strings. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Chapman visited recently with Kathy and Philip Blackler and family of Rus- seldale. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gibson, Mrs. Joan Fisher of Waterlao; spent the weekend in Hamilton attending the 35th wedding anniversary celebra- tion of Mr. and Mrs, Bill Fisher.
