motorcycle crash
A 21 -year-old Gorrie man was
killed last Friday evening in a
motorcycle crash in the village.
According to an Ontario Provin-
cial Police spokesman, Timothy H.
Boyd of Wellington Street in Gorrie
died June 30 at 7 p.m.
The motorcycle he was driving
went out of control on Victoria
Street, report the OPP and struck a
parked van on the shoulder of the
street.
Tim Boyd rested at the Betts
Funeral Home, Gorrie Chapel,
where friends paid their respects
Sunday afternoon and evening.
Funeral service was held at two
o'clock Monday, with interment in
Wroxeter Cemetery.
Nursing home
owner granted
an extension
Mac MacGowan, owner of the
Brookhaven Nursing Horne at

action to the government.
The original date for submission,
which will outline Mr. MacGowan's
intentions for the nursing home,
was June 30, last Friday. However, a
member of the Wingham and Dis-
trict Nursing Home Needs Com-
mittee, Wingham Mayor Ian More-
land, said the deadline now has
been extended until Sept. 30.
Mr. MacGowan has petitioned
the provincial government for 25
more nursing home beds in order to
build a new facility, for which he
already has acquired the land.
Mr. MacGowan has been lobby-
ing the government for more nurs-
ing home beds since he bought the
facility in 1983. If he does not
receive approval for more beds, the
home is in danger of closing by
June of 1993.

Bob Middleton chairs
Wingham hospital board
Bob Middleton of Wingham has
been named chairman of Wingham
and District Hospital Board of Gov-
ernors for 1989-90. A long-time
member of the board, Mr. Middle-
ton has served as vice-chairman
and member of the board's man-
agement committee. He was nomi-
nated to the chairman's post by for-
mer Chairman Mary Lou Thomp-
son at the board's inaugural meet-
ing last Thursday.
Doris Inglis, Turnberry represen-
tative on the board, was named
vice-chairman and chairman of this
year's management committee. The
committee includes Mrs. Thomp-
son, Janet Clark, Dr. Charles
Omole, Les Tervit, and Ross Davies.
Hosptial Administrator Norman
Hayes is the board's corporate sec-
retary, while hospital treasurer Gor-
don Baxter serves as recording sec-
retary and corporate treasurer.
Lee Vance is recipient
of Canada Day certificate
Lee Vance is Wingham's 1989
recipient of the Canada Day Certifi-
cate of Merit.
Mayor Ian Moreland presented
the certificate last week to a sur-
prised Mr. Vance at his downtown
drugstore.
As Mr. Moreland explained, the
award is presented to an "outstand-
ing citizen" of the community on
Canada Day. Council was asked
earlier this year to nominate some-
one for their contribution to the
quality of life here in Wingham and
Mr. Vance was an obvious choice.
In presenting the certificate to
Mr. Vance, the mayor said council
and the people of Wingham recog-
nize his contribution to the commu-
nity over the past 34 years,
During those years, Mt More-
land said, Mr. Vance has personi-
fied the quintessential small-town
pharmacist — helpful, knowledge-
able and with time to spare for
everyone.

dedication, courtesy and good
manners are becoming scarce, Mr
Moreland continued, Mr. Vance
continues to provide his services to
the public, after hours when neces-
sary, with the same courteous and
unassuming manner which has
exemplified his time in Wingham.
Mr. Vance also is an active mem-
ber of the Wingham Business Asso-
ciation and has been a member of
the Wingham Lions Club for 34
years: In fact, three of his fellow
Lids Club members, ' Lloyd
"Casey" Casemore, Russell Zur-
brigg and Stewart Beattie, looked
on proudly as Mr. Vance Was pre-
sented with his certificate.
In conclusion, Mr. Moreland said,
"The Corporation of the Town of
Wingham congratulates him on, the
award and extends best wishes for
the future to both. Mr. and Mrs.
Vance, recognizing that the active
and loving support of his wife

in Mr. Vance's' business life."
Mrs. Clark will once again head
the hospital's finance committee.
Mr. Davies chairs the property com-
mittee, and Mrs. Thompson, public
relations.
Jean Whitby has been appointed
to the pastoral committee.
Mr. Middleton also chairs the
hospital's joint -conference commit-
tee, which includes a number of
board members, medical staff, and
administration.
