back-up for Chief Harley Gaunt
during the daytime hours, but hir-
ing a full-time deputy chief is not
among them.
The suggestion to hire a deputy
chief was quickly dismissed by
board members at the June meet-
ing.
A letter from the fire chiet was
read at last week's meeting. In the
letter, Chief Gaunt informed the
board that, as of the end of this
month, he is the only officer in the
Wingham station available to
answer calls during the daytime
hours.

Lloyd Casemore receives
Citizen of the Year award
Lloyd "Casey" Casemore, Wing -
ham's .1989 Advance -Times Citizen
of the Year, was honored last Tues-
day evening.
Mr. Caere-
with his award at a Lions Club
meeting.. David Wenger of Wenger
Publications was on hand for the
presentation, as was Advance
-
Times editor Margaret Stapleton.
Mr. Casemore is the second recip-
ient of The Advance -Times Citizen
of the Year Award, said Mr. Wenger,
and was chosen by a selection com-
mittee of community members ear-
lier this spring.
Mr. Wenger said "Casey" has
long been a friend of The Advance -
Times, supplying news, pho-
tographs and insights of his many
trips to Europe.
Mr. Casemore also is a friend of
the community, added Mr. Wenger.
He is heavily involved with the
Lions Club, the Legion, the curling
club, the hospital auxiliary and the
Wingham United Church, just to
name a few.
Mr. Casemore has had his share
of problems in the past several
years, including‘ two boutshn
cancer, the most recent being this
spring. However, he bears his own
troubles in silence and is always
there to help a sick or needy friend,
noted Mr. Wenger.
Finally, "Casey" is a friend to the
world. As Wingham's "good -will
ambassador", he has made friends
virtually everywhere he goes
whether aboard the Concorde or in
the streets of Rome, people remem-
ber him.
At the conclusion of Mr.
Wenger's remarks, he presented
Mr. Casemore with an commemora-
tive clock, complete with inscribed
plaque, as a keepsake.
"Casey" thanked the newspaper
and the selection committee for the
honor. He said he is truly humbled
and proud to be chosen Wingham's
1989 Citizen of the Year.

"At this time, the members -of
this department who are available'
to answer fire calls during daytime
hours are mostly new and they do
not have the experience or expertise
required to make decisions that
relate to fire emergencies. It would
be a disaster to even think of
putting any one of these members
in this position.
"In my opinion," concludes
Chief Gaunt, "the board has no
other option but to make available
another officer of this department
to help share this load."

The Wingham Kinsmen Club has
plans to turn the old Lower Town
schoolhouse into a drop-in centre
for teens and other community
groups.
The club will sign a lease with
the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority for use of the building
and surrounding property.
Bob, Hewines, a spokesman for
the Kinsmen, says the group will
undertake a major renovation of the
school house, estimated to cost
$50,000.
The newly -formed Teens Unlim-
ited group was looking for a drop-
in centre, says Mr. Hewines and the
Kinsmen were looking for a project.
The school house provides a good
location, he adds and can be used
by other groups as well.
Les Tervit, MVCA manager, also
is pleased that the building will be
put to good use and that necessary
repairs will be made.
The Kinsmen will start fundrais-
ing in the near future for the project
and also wilt be applying for gov-
ernment grants.

more people throughout our com-

Details were sketchy at press
time Monday morning, but Chief
Gaunt says the fire involved a barn
full of hot hay at Lot 12, Con. 4 of
Grey. Air bottles were dispatched
later in the morning.
At 2:55 a.m. Sunday, June 18, fire-
fighters were summoned to the
William Klumpenhower residence
at Lot 11, Con. 13 of Howick Town-

Chief Gaunt says a fire had broken
out in the upper storey of a two-
storey house, damaging two bed-
rooms and two other upstairs
rooms. He estimates damage at,
$50,00 to $60,000.
The cause has not been deter-
mined, says the chief, but the fire is
not of a suspicious nature.
