HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Wingham Advance-Times, 1989-06-13, Page 21St. Andrew's WMS meets in upper room The Women's Missionary Society of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church held its monthly meeting in the upper room on June 6. Mrs. Hazel Bateman and Mrs. Mary Woods were m charge of the meet- ing. Mrs. Bateman opened the meet-, ing by introducing Mrs. Isobel Arbuckle who gave a report on the 75th anniversary of the Western Division of the Synod Conference, held at Western University, Lon- don, m May. The topic was "Prepa- ration for a Celebration". Miss Merle Wilson presided at the piano for the singing of three beautiful old hymns. Mrs. Grace Wright and Mrs. Annie Conn received the offering, with the dedi- catory prayer given by Mrs. Woods. Scripture was from Philippians, chapter four. Mrs. Bateman and Mrs. Woods led a litany of thanks- giving and Mrs. Bateman gave a profile of Dr. Sue Kober who does medical missionary work in Central Africa. Mrs. Grace Ford played a musical number entitled 'Spanish Chant". President Mrs. Shirley Donaldson conducted the business, with assis- tant secretary Mrs. Gertie Tiffin reading the minutes of the last meeting, also the correspondence and roll call. Treasurer Mrs. Bate- man gave her report and the WMS Purpose was repeated in unison. Mrs. Donaldson closed with prayer and lunch was served by Mrs. Wright and Miss Merle Wil- son. Church receives funds for summer student Wingham Pentecostal Church is pleased to announce that for the fifth consecutive year it has received a grant from the Summer Employment -Experience Develop- ment (SEED) Program. This program is provided by the federal government to assist stu- dents with practical work experi- ence in their field of study. The grant will be used to hire a program coordinator for the popu- lar Kids' Place, a daily, non -denom- inational activity program during July and August. This 90 -minute program features a variety of. games, sports, stories, crafts, films and puppets. Designed for children ages six through 12, last year the average daily attendance was 34 with a peak of 63. The coo inator this year is Kerry Hobbs, a dent at Eastern Pente- costal Bible College in Peterbor- ough. Miss Hobbs, a native of New Liskeard, has a variety of experi- ence in working with children. In addition to her duties with Kids' Place, she also will participate in the other ministries of the church. Wingham Pentecostal Church is pleased to offer this community service again this year. Canadettes end year with Awards Night The Wingham Canadettes Majorette and Flag Corps recently held its year-end and awards ban- quet at the Armouries. There was a large attendance of parents for a delicious potluck dinner. Program awards were given to Erin Forrest, Shelly Skinn, Stephanie Hills, Danielle Wagner, Courtney Zinn, Erin Skinn and Laura Sinclair. A small gift was presented to each member of the executive and call mom, with a special gift to the loyal president, Mary Hall. The senior girls presented Patti Robert- son with a decorated baton, in appreciation of her teaching for the past year. This brings to a close the year's activities and most girls are looking forward to the fall.
