Ontario cattle are in demand in
South Areeica,Recently five Sim-
mental, heifers from Southwestern
Ontario were exported to Co-
lumbia, South America. Three ani-
mals werepurchased from Van
Ankutn Sinunentals from Wroxeter
and two from George Taylor,
Thorndale. Also two Shaver beef
blend bulls were bought, from Don-
ald Shaver Jr from Newton.
Donald Shaver Jr. and Dave
Roberts of Shaver Poultry facilitat-
ed the sale; to a large ranch near
Bogota, the capital of Columbia.
The ranch, Columbiana de Incub-
cion Ltd., has repeatedly imported
large numbers of Shaver. Poultry
chicks from Cambridge, Ont. The
ranch is located in the mountains
west of Bogota.
The owner of the ranch, Gabriel
Camargo, visited Ontario and also
bought some Jersey cattle in
Ontario.
The Ontario purchases were
assembled in Miami, Fla., along

Inspections of the Ontario cattle
were made by Dr. Gabriel Valez, the
supervisor of the 2700 -head beef
cattle operations of the ranch. They
already have some Shaver beef
blends in their program and want
to expand with them. Dr. Valez
toured Ontario during a snow
storm in February.
Cattle in Columbia will have to
adjust to a much hotter climate. Dr.
Valez insisted on cattle with good
chest capacity so they could better
adapt to the thin mountain air
around Bogota. Lotsof pigmenta-
tion to resist sunburn and smooth
hair to ward off tics were also
important.
Donald Shaver will visit the
ranch in July to check on the
progress of the animals.
