The Wingham Riverview Drive -
In Squirts travelled to Guelph last
Saturday and collected finalist tro-
phies in an eight -team tournament.
The local lads were downed 11-2 in
the final by the host Guelph team.
Other centres represented includ-
'ed Owen Sound, Sarnia, Galt, Pick-
ering; Burlington, Thornhill and
Guelph.
Wingham 15, Sarnia 6
Wingham started quickly in its
first game, picking up two runs in
the first inning on two Sarnia errors
and a base hit by Mark Gibson. The
locals added two more in the sec-
ond via a walk to Shaun Walker
and singles by Shawn Fair and Neil
Mowbray.
They chaulked up three more
runs in the third on three walks, an
error and a key base hit by Evan
Poll.
In the fourth inning, Wingham
sent nine players to the plate and
tallied five runs on base hits by Josh
Johnston, Mowbray, Joel Pegg, Gib-
son, Travis Baler and Fair.
Sarnia got on the scoreboard in
the fifth, pushing across three runs
on three hits. Wingham replied
with three of their own in the sixth
on singles by Chris Alexander, Fair,
Poll and Johnston.
Sarnia rebounded with three
more runs in the seventh, but fell
well shot. -
Gibson went the distance for
Wmgham, picking up 11 strike -outs
and scattering eight hits, while issu-
ing only one walk. Alexander made
the best defensive play of the game
in the third . inning making a
shoestring catch on a fly ball to
right field.
Shaun Walker hurled several
balls flawlessly at second base.
Wingham 9, Pickering 6
Wingham dug themselves into a
hole early and had to do a lot of
scrambling to get out after falling
behind 5-0 after three innings.
Pickering notched one run in the
first on two singles and a couple of
stolen bases. They added another
run in the second on a walk, a
stolen base and a fielder's choice.
They followed that with three more
runs in the third on two singles and
a homerun.
Wmgham began its comeback in
the fourth inning, racking up two
runs on a walk to Mowbray and
consecutive singles by Fair, Jeremy
Creeden and Pegg.
Pickering made it 2-0 in their half
of the fourth with an unearned run.
Wingham rallied in the fifth,
sending 10 batters to rhe plate and
pushing across seven runs to take a
9-6 lead which they held until the
end. The boys also capitalized. on
two walks, a couple of errors and
then utilized sacrifice bunts, stolen
bases and key run -scoring doubles
by Walker and Danny Gusso •to
steal the lead.
Things got a little tight in the sev-
enth when Pickering banged out
two singles after the first out. How-
ever, Pegg struck out the final two
batters to end the threat.
Joel Pegg picked up the win,
allowing eight hits, walking three
and striking out eight.
Guelph 11, Wingham 2
In the championship game,
Guelph gave Wingham a lesson in
hitting as they banged out 15 hits,
including three homeruns. Two of
the •homeruns were stroked in the
first inning to give Guelph a quick
2-0 margin.
They added three more in the
second on three singles and a triple.
Wingham started a semblance of
another comeback in the third
when Fair and Creeden drew walks
and Gibson singled to give Wing -
ham its first run°
The fourth inning was the back
breaker as Guelph racked up four
runs on two doubles, two singles,
three stolen bases and an error.
Wingham came back with a run
in the fifth on a single by Fair, a sac-
rifice bunt by Creeden and a double
by Walker. But that ended the scor-
ing for Wingham. Guelph added
single rims in the fifth and sixth to
take the championship.
Fair scored both of Wingham's
runs ashe drew two walks and
stroked a single, Wingham gath-
ered eight other hits during the
game: Walker and Pegg each
banged out a double and single and
Johnston, Baier, Poll and Gibson
each collected singles.
Gibson started the game and
