AA Big Book celebrates
its golden anniversary
A book which millions throe
out the world have claimed is '
responsible for changes that literal-
ly saved their lives celebrates its
50th anniversary this month.
The General Service Office of
Algpholics, Anonymousfine-New
York has announced the golden
anniversary of the publication of its
book "Alcoholics Anonymous" —
affectionately called The Big Book
by members and friends of the fel-
lowship.
To date, more than seven million
copies have been sold in the United
States alone and thousands of
translations in fifteen other lan-
guages have (been purchased
abroad.
According to one AA staff mem-
ber, this book has played a crucial
role in the success and expansion of
the AA program to its present
world-wide prominence. From its
earliest days, it has spread, out to
assist'in the recovery of 1:editions of
alcoholics and is used by AA mem-
bers in groups across Canada,
including many in this area --
Wingham, Teeswater, Brussels, Lis-
towel, Lucknow to name -a few.
The Big Book describes the hard-
won principles which early mem-
bers discovered could lead to sobri-
ety, and which are now the basis of
the recovery of millions who other-
wise would have been doomed to
the physical and emotional toll that
is exacted of the alcoholic by his or
her illness.
"Alcoholic's Anonymous" has
appeared in 16 languages —
Afrikaans, Dutch, English, Finnish,
F1mish, French, German, Icelandic,
an, Japanese, Korean, Norwe-
, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish
and Swedish.
It is ranked among the hard-
cover, nonfiction best sellers of all
time.
It did not, however, have an aus-
pidous beginning,
The AA Fellowship numbered
fewer than 100 members in 1938
when these pioneers decided to
write down their aperiences in
recovery from alcoholism.

little attention and few _sales.„,,The
financial picture was stark and only
loans from sympathetic friends
kept the publishing venture alive.
_Then, in March 1941-, following
Publication of ,an article on Akby
Jack Alexander in The Saturday
Evening Post, demand from des-
perate alcoholics put the sales on an
accelerating curve which has con-
tinued for 50 years.
Originally priced at $3.50 (11.),

$3.60 (U.S.), despite skyrocketing
book publishing costs.
This is because it is published by
a not-for-profit organization whose
administrative costs are largely cov
ered by contributions from AA's
more than 1.7.5 million members,
Copies may be obtained by writ-
ing AA World Services Inc., Box

York, New York, 10163.
