BPel _producers say na -
to maarketng commission
Nearly two-thirds of producers
who participated in Ontario's beef
cattle marketing vote have said no
to the establishment of a producer
coptrolled marketing commission.
A significant percentage of
Ontario beef cattle producers has
voted to maintain all of their mar-
keting options, including direct -to -
packer sales, Agriculture and Food
Minister Jack Riddell said of the
news that 72 per cent of producers
had cast nays in the vote.
"I now urge all the members of
Ontario's beef industry to work
together to achieve change and
improvements for their industry,"
Mr. Riddell said.
On the ballot's. second question,
just 21 per cent voted in favor of a
marketing commission, if it were
formed, working towards a market-
ing plan with the authority to man-
age supply and determine price.
The mail -in vote, which had a
deadline of April 14, 1989, gave the
beef cattle producers throughout
Ontario an opportunity to express
their opinions on the future of the
their marketing system, as recom-
mended by the beef marketing task
force.
Nearly 20,000 beef cattle produc-
ers cast valid ballots.
As his next step, Mr. Riddell said,
he will discuss with the industry,
the other recommendations of the
task force.
More" than 9,000 producers
attended information meetings
across the province. An information
package and the questions -- both
prepared by a committee made up
of aepfleseinatives from the Ontario
Cattlemen's Association, Ontario
Beef Producers for a Change Inc.,
and OMAF staff, were sent out to
producers.
Questions asked on the ballot
were:
—Are you in favor of the pro-
posed producer -controlled market -
ing commission which would regu-
late the sale of all beef cattle in
Ontario?
—Are you in favor of the above
proposed producer -controlled mar-
keting commission working toward
a national beef cattle marketing
plan with the authority to manage
supply and determine price?
CSA warns
against unsafe
door openers
The Canadian Standards Associa-
tion (CSA) has issued a warning to
owners of Lynx Automatic Dor-
man, Models 455 and 460 garage
door openers -to immediately check
them to ensure that the safety -
reversing feature is functioning
properly.
An .investigation has revealed
that if the actuator arm of the safetk
reversing switch is bent, or oriented
differently to that of factory setting,
the door may not reverse if an
obstruction is encountered during
the closing cycle.
This situation contributed to the
death of a five-year-old child who
was trapped under the leading
edge of the door, the CSA says.
As a result, CSA is also warning
owners to keep children away from
areas where thew units have been
installed, and not to allot, them to
play with the operating controls.
Should the door not reverse. the
CSA warns owners to not attempt
to make any adjustments. For ser-
vice, they should contact the manu-
facturer at the following address or
telephone number, and arrange for
authorized service: Lynx Industries
Incorporated, 175 Upper Edison
Avenue, St. Lambert, Quebec, J4R
2R3, (514) 866-1068.

Fire officials again point out deficiencies
Although Huron County Council
must continue to wait to see if the
provincial. government will
approve a plan for a -new Huron -
view, the fire code deficiencies
which; in part, promptea..the_gian
in the first place have been again
placed front and centre before
them.
During presentation of reports at
its regular May meeting, council
was told that a representative of the
Ontario Fire Marshal's office and
Clinton Fire Chief Fred Lobb had
attended the April meeting of the
Huronview management commit-
tee to discuss fire code problems at
the county -operated home for the
aged.
The. men told -the co nm tee that
bedroom doors and storage room
doors in many areas do not have
sufficient fire rating — the length of
time they will contain a fire before
it can burn through. — anddo not
have the required door closers.
In addition, they complained of
there not being enough directional
exit signs, and a few areas not hav-
ing adequate smoke and heat detec-
tors.
All health care facilities are sup-
posed to comply with the fire code

by Feb11, 1990, although an exten-
sion can be granted by the local fire
chief.
The county has been reluctant to
spend a lot of money making
changes to the current building
when a new one could be under,
construction in the near future, if
provincial approval is granted.
