top priority for funding
e a zat on of Central
Huron Secondary School has been
given top priority by the Huron
County Board of Education.
At its regular May meeting, the
board reviewed a list of capital pro-
jects according to funding feasibili-
ty and urgency, and the CHSS pro-
ject was placed at the head of that
priority list.
Where possible, cost cuts were
made to keep within the $500,000
allocated by the Ontario Ministry of
Education.
HCBE Education Director Bob
Allan referred to the CHSS revital-
ization project as a priority item
that "could not be tampered with".
Initial discussions concerning the
proposed project began taking
shape in 1986. Planning continued
through 1987 and 1988 as it became
clear that the Huron -Perth Roman
Catholic Separate School Board did
not require space for a Catholic sec-
ondary school.
The school site is now ready_for
major renovation and the recom-
mended cost is $100,000.

gains recognition
in poster contest
Two F. E. Madill Secondary
School students have been recog-
nized recently, both for doing
extremely well in Legion -sponsored
activities.
Cindy Newton, a Grade 9 stu-
dent at the high school and the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike
Newton of Wroxeter, will have her
prize-winning Remembrance Day
poster entered in the Dominion
competition.
Don Farnell, president of Branch
180 of the Royal Canadian Legion,
Wingham, reports that Cindy's
poster was first in the intermediate
division at the branch, zone, district
and Ontario command finals.
The poster now is in the Canada -
wide competition.
Margaret Jarvis, a Grade 10 stu-
dent at Madill, also has done very
well in recent public speaking com-
petitions. The topic for her speech
was "Cystic Fibrosis".
After winning first prize in the
junior secondary category at the
Legion contest on Feb. 18, Margaret
advanced to the zone contest held
March 4 at Clinton. She also was
the winner there.
She won in her division at the
district contest held April 2 in
Guelph and was second at the area
competition last month at Thorn-
hill. The area competition is one
level below provincial.
Margaret is the daughter of
Frank and Mary Stretton of Brus-
sels.

Robertson Memorial Public School,
Goderich District Collegiate Insti-
tute, and Seaforth Public School has
been set at $50,000.
This has been reduced from the
previous estimate of $100,000.
The board has decided to estab-
lish an annual cycle of repairs and
maintenance, and HCBE adminis-
tration feels $50,000 annually over a
five-year period will have a pro-
found impact.
Priorities for this year include
Huron Centennial, a portion of
Robertson Memorial and minimal
engineering work at Seaforth Pub-
lic.
The board has set aside $10,000
for the purchase of a classroom set
of dedicated word processors for
Central Huron Secondary School.
The reduced amount identifies
that the balance of the $30,000 cost
will be required from the regular
dapital expenditure amount
approved in the base budget.
The board also approved an
administration recommendatiain to
)urchase $40,000 worth of addition -
stand -alone computers for use in
elementary classrooms.
Administration also suggested
that ongoing renovations at the
board's education centre in Clinton
should be extended over a longer
period of time.
The board agreed that $1,000 will
be applied to third -year floor and
ceiling replacement, and long range
general refurbishing; and $3,000
will purchase software and IBM
.linkage for desktop publishing.
,It was also agreed to reduce the
allocation for the employee assis-
tance plan from $7,000 to $5,000.
A total of $47,000 has been allo-
cated for textbook purchases, trans-
portation, and other inflationary
items, and $10,000 has been set
aside for music equipment repairs
and maintenance.
Other allocations include: $20,000
for science lab renovation at
Goderich District Collegiate Insti-
tute; $25,000 for renovations at
Vanastra; $65,000 for window con-
versions at Seaforth District High
School; $30,000 for initial renova-
tion to the arts program at South
Huron District Secondary School in
Exeter; $16,000 for the purchase of a
maintenance van; $65,000 for tech-
nological studies program renova-
tions at RE. Madill, Central Huron,
South Huron and Seaforth District
Secondary Schools.

The co-operative education pro-
gram at the F. E. Madill Secondary
School has allowed me to gain
hands-on experience in my future
career — teaching.
It also has allowed me to look at
the teaching profession from a per-
spective other than that of a stu-
dent.
I have been assisting Bill Chaulk
with the Grade 5-6 class at Turnber-
ry Central School. I have a variety
of tasks there, ranging from mark-
ing daily assignments to planning
English and science lessons or help-
ing with math.
The most satisfying task I have,
though, is helping the students one-
on-one. I enjoy seeing a student
improve after receiving some extra
help.
I would like to thank the staff
and students, especially Grade 5-6,
at Turnberry Central for their sup-
port and acceptance. Because of
them, I look forward to a career in
teacltirtg.
