Loss of control accounts
for most motorcycle deaths
Motorcyclists take to the road in
record numbers each spring and
according to the Ontario Provincial
Police, all too often an enjoyable
activity turns to tragedy.
In 1987-88, on highways
patrolled by the OPP, 112 motorcy-
clists and passengers were killed.
The most common contributing
factor in fatal motorcycle accidents
is loss of control at high speed,
which accounted for 52 per cent of
the deaths in 1987-88.
Other major causes of fatal acci-
dents are alcohol consumption and
failure to yield.
face the same situations as car
drivers, except they are driving a
two -wheel vehicle as opposed to a
four-wheel one," says S/Sgt. Bob
Lyon of the OPP's traffic and
marine section. "With this type of
vehicle, there is less margin for
error."
Motorcyclists are often involved
in accidents, because they are not
seen by other drivers. Motorcycle
headlights must be on at all times,
even during the day, and bright
reflective clothing should be worn.
"On a motorcycle, even if you're
in the right, you lose," Mr. Lyon

Province increases funds
for wife assault prevention
Newly announced funding of
$5.4 million for wife assault preven-
tion programs will significantly
enhance Ontario's services for
women and children, says Gregory
Sorbara, minister responsible for
women's issues.
The new allocation of $5.4 mil-
lion and a cost of living increase of
About $500,000 brings the provin-
dal government's 1989-90 financial
commitment for wife assault to
total of $40 million, a 17iper cen
----2-4nCreaSe1n funds'over1988-89.
Of the allocation, $5 million will
go to the ministry of community
and social services, primarily for
services to women and children.
This $5 million includes:
—$2.7 million to enhance existing
shelter services — such as
improved staffing ratios — particu-
larly for shelters in rural communi-
ties.
—$200,000 to increase the num-
ber of child support workers in
response th recent increases in the
number of shelter beds, ensuring
that every shelter in the province
will have at least one full-time child
support worker to address chil-
dren's needs.
—$2.1 million for counselling
programs in community agencies
for female victims of wife assault,
children who have witnessed vio-
lence in their homes, and male bat-
terers.
The remaining $400,000 of new
funding will be allocated to one
new initiative and four ongoing
ones.
As a new initiative, the Office for
Disabled Persons will receive
$50,000 which will go toward a
study of the incidence of violence
against women with disabilities,
and the accessibility of government
programs for this group.
The four ongoing initiatives to
receive increased funding are:
—The attorney general's Victim -
Witness Assistance Program will
receive an additional ,000 for the
xisting programs operating in 10
rown Attorney Offices in the
rovince.
—The ministry of citizenship will
eceive an additional $45,000 to
upport existing pilot projects
hich increase immigrant families'
ccessibility to wife assault services
rough community-based inter-
reter services and intercultural
ining programs.
—The ministry of education will
allocated an additional $120,000
r school programs that raise edu-
tors°, awargness of wife assallit,e
s impact on children, and how
schools can play an effective pre-
vention role at the community
level.
Funds are allocated to -23 initia-
tives in three key areas: law
enforcement and criminalization,
family support programs and shel-
ter services, and public and profes-
sional education and prevention
activities.
