The Wingham Advance-Times, 1989-05-09, Page 3Association is concerned about beer tent The Riverside Ratepayers° Asso- ciation has some concern about a recent council decision to allow the operation of a beer tent at an unspecified date this summer. At the regular May meeting of Winghaan Town Council, represen- tatives of the association presented some of those concerns and asked council to reconsider its decision. In his words to council, John Mann said the selling of alcoholic beverages in parks and open spaces adjacent to residential areas is not appropriate. 'We believe that the official plan of the Town of Wingham supports that," he said. The association feels that a public meeting should be held when issues of this nature arise, and referred to sections of the official plan to augment that argument. "We fail to see how a beer tent contributes to or maintains the character of our residential neigh- borhood," he said. He asked that council "be guided - by the official plan and their ratepayers, and reconsider the deci- sion to allow the beer tent," Dan Stuckey read a number of comments excerpted from about 40 sheets returned in a survey con- ducted by the association. Of all of the comments read, none was in favor of having a beer tent at Riverside Park. One went so far as to suggest "this use of the park is courting disaster" The association also asked coun- cil for more information on the pro- posed beer tent — the hours of operation, where it would be locat- ed, how many ball diamonds would be in use during the tourna- ment, and if food would be served. Council referred these questions to its finance and management committee to prepare a recommen- dation for the June council meeting. "We trust that you will hear this plea and act on it in our best inter- est," Mr. Mann said. Last month, coun it gav "ts approval to the request to opera,e a beer tent at Riverside Park during a ball tournament "in conjunction with Wingham Hoedown". In the event there is no Hoedown again this year, the request said the tour- nament would be held at a date to be specified later. Air cadets offer to work to pay their rent The Wingham Air Cadets are willing to work to pay theirrent for the use of the Wingham Armouries. At least that's the message Wing - ham Town Council was given at its regular May meeting. Councillor Denise Wilkins, prop- erty committee chairman, told council the cadets and the commit- tee have agreed to the work -for - rent arrangement. Work projects such as picking up litter and general cleanup have been suggested as tasks for the cadet work crews. Building permits passed at council Several building permits and one demolition permit were approved at the May meeting of East Wawanosh council. Permits were approved for: Charles and Helena Krieger, Lot 42, Con. 8, a garage; Freiburger and Scott Construction, Humphrey sub- division, a residence; Siebolt Siert- sema, Lot 31, Con. 1, a granary; Carl Kuntz, Lot 25, Con. 5, a garage and (Ivan D,ow, Lot 28, Con.. 10, a •i) ,a.A "IT'S A DEFINITE ADVANTAGE FOR US.
