Learning is fun, and worth
doing all your life" was demon-
strated with logic and humor by Dr.
William Andrews, speaker at the
1989 Excellence in Education
Awards Banquet hosted by District
45 of the Ontario Secondary School
Teachers Federation and held in
Holmesville last Wednesday
Dr. Andrews, a professor of edu-
cation in the science department of
the Ontario College of Education at
the University of Toronto, main-
tains that most of us stop thinking
once we leave school.
His audience was encouraged to
think for themselves. Besides using
the linear scientific process that pin-
points a problem, collects data,
makes predictions, then designs
and experiment to determine
action, Dr. Andrews recommends
lateral thinking. This, he defines as
looking sideways and asking w
Read labels, check what Con-
sumers Report says before buying
expensive items, and pay no atten-
tion to television commercials, he
advised. - -
The scientific method should be
applied to everything from buying
shampoo to shopping for a car, he
said. As an example, he held up a
bottle of shampoo containing Wheat
germ oil and honey, commenting
that the edible products therein had

Noting that a famous thpaste
promises to fight cavities,Dr.
Andrews pointed out that son'te
fights are lost. Besides, "youi caret
fight a hole", and nothing on the
label says the product will stop,
tooth decay. .
He also questioned what was
meant by .`below the gum line" as
that would mean one thing vi bile
one's head is erect, and the, reveme
while bent over a sink brushing
one's teeth.
"All these things are sold to peo-
ple who don't think like they were
taught in school," he said.
Describing himself as a self-
taught ecologist, Dr.. Andrews
turned serious for a few moments
to talk about what our careless,
wasteful actions are doing to our
planet.
e mentioned forest die -back,
ozo a depletion in the atmosphere
an too much at ground level
ich burns lungs and crops, and
the huge mountains of garbage we
are producing. Science knows the
cause of these ills, he said, but the
solution calls for individual
response - one act can make a dif-
ference, if one tries.. ... '
Dr. Andrews is a brother-in-law
of Ken Wood, retiring F. E. Madill
Secondary School principal. He
gTew up in Clinton and graduated
from what was then Clinton and
District High School.
The Excellence in Education ban-
quets were begun three years ago to
honor students, teachers, and mem-
bers of the community who have
made outstanding contributions to
education.
F. E. Madill Secondary School
students singled out for awards this
year were Ben Barnes, Mike Cardy,
Jennine Finlayson, Mike Hawkins
and Kevin Smith. Teachers honored
were George Gibson and Betty
Shaw.
Wingham Branch 180 of the
Royal Canadian Legion was pre-
sented the community award, and
Shane Vandekemp and Leah Rich-
mond are this year's regional win-
ners of the Marian Drysdale Award.
