Agrici1•lture and Food Minister and Huron MPP Jack Riddell made the announcement last week on behalf of Municipal Affairs Minis- ter John Eakins. The move takes effect May 1, 1989. "I am pleased to see the initiative displayed by our county in being only the second in the province to request and receive these approval authorities," MM i Riddell said in making the announcement. The powers relate to plans of su division and coo, dominiurn road closing and ;part, 1.Qt7eontrol, bylaws. In addition, municipal zon- ing bylaws will now be reviewed by the county. The delegation of authority, which falls under Section 4 of the 1983 Planning Act, began in the mid-1970s, and Huron is the second county to formally request and receive delegation of a number of ministerial approval authorities. This new approach, the ministry feels, will make the system more efficient by: —Speeding up the development approval process. —Increasing the public's accessi- bility to the decision-making authority. —Making county council more accountable and responsive to -local needs. ---Increasing local conditions to be reflected in planning decisions. —Lessening the administrative workload. —Helping the public maintain direct contact with one planner from the beginning to the end of a project.
