Australian newspaper interesting to compare Wingham suffered through e devastating heat wave in February Now, wait a minute, before you think we've taken complete leave of our senses, it's Wingham, Australia, were talking about. Bob. Carbert of Wingham `was good enough to bring in a copy of the Feb. 22 edition of the Wingham Chronicle, the weekly newspaper in the Australian town. Dr. Roger Schwass, a former assistant farm editor at CKNX and his wife Mary, toured the "Land Down Under" this winter and visit- ed Wingham, Australia. They sent Mr. Carbert a copy of the newspa- per as a pdint of interest, Aside from a few strange -sound- ing columns, such as "Up the Dingo" and "Tinonee Topics", the newspaper is filled with the type of familiar features carried in this newspaper, including personal notes, old files, death notices and classified advertising, to name just a few. One interesting feature is a story about David Mudie, the Australian youth who visited our town this January during the dead of a Cana- dian winter. Young Mr. Mudie was in Canade on a Lions Club exchange, staying with a family at Strathroy. The Chronicle reports: "A high- light of David's visit was a stopover in Wingham, Canada, a town of 3,000 people and dubbed by the locals as the Radio and Television Town of Canada. It's reported to be the smallest town in the country to boast its own radio and TV stations. "Armed with piles of heavy clothing and a new pair of snow boots, David was taken on a tour of the main street by local Lion Lloyd "Casey" Casemore." The lead story on .the front page of the Chronicle is about plans to promote the Beef Week '89 pro- gram. The schedt%le of events, com- mencing April 29, includes a field day, barbecue, fashion parade and judging. The businesses in Wingham, Australia, are as eager to promote the town as : they are here. Aus- traliart organizers even were plan- ning a Crazy bay sale to be held on April 15. The citizens of Wingham also plan to expand their neighborhood - watch program in light of a drop of 20 per cent in residential break-ins, the newspaper reports. For the week ending Feb. 21, the hottest day in Wingham was Feb. 19, checking in at 30.5 degrees Cel- sius and the coldest morning was Feb. 20 at 13.5 degrees. Cricket, swimming and surfing all are popular sports in Winghatn, Australia and the accomplishments of local youngsters are detailed in the paper. .All in all, even though Wingham,. Australia, is on the other aside .of the world, we found more similarities than differences between the two towns and the interests of their peo- ple.
