Cancer society ftrnds help
to finance local services
°April is Cancer Month and the
Wingham Branch of the Canadian.
Cancer Society is now actively
involved in its annual fund-raising
campaign.
According to Tun Keil, Wingham
branch president, The campaign
usually involves a door-to-door
canvass, a sale of daffodils, circula-
" tion of a letter asking local busi-
nesses for donations, and special
events aimed at raising funds.
,The cdoar-to-door, .canvass, Mr.
Keil Says, is broken into two-sepa–
rate areas — the Town of Wingham,
and the rural area of northern
Huron County consisting of Brus-
sels, Gorrie, Fordwich and Wrox-
eter.
The Wingham canvass is chaired
by Marlene Leedham while the
rural chairman is Doris McCall of
Brussels.
"To give you an idea of how the
canvass is set up, the town is divid-
ed into 41 sections and each has a
volunteer who will go door-to-door
to canvass for donations,' Mr. Keil
says. "Marlene L eedhain is respon-
sible for finding and co-ordinating
the 41 volunteers, and Doris per-
forms the same function in the rural
areas."
Mr. Keil points out that the
money donated to the society is
used locally for a_ . ,nwnber of ser-
vices, including:
-Patient services such as drugs,
supplies, and transportation.
—Educating .the 'public. , Educas-.
ticonal information is distributed -
through the schools, and different
events are held ,promoting and edu-
cating people on the importance 9f
early detection; gond;`eatirt. "h bits-,
hazards of smoking. •
Funds are also used for cancer
research — to not only find cures
and to provide better treatments,
but to also establish the causes of
the disease.
Daffodils may be purchased at
the office of Keil Insurance Brokers
