Madill athletes record
personal bests at meet
Members of the F. E. Madill Track
and Field Team travelled to York
University, Toronto, last Friday and
Saturday to compete with 2,400
other Ontario athletes in the largest
indoor meet in North America.
In the Senior boys' 400 -metre,
Mike Cardy had a personal best
performance with a time of 52.6
seconds. This is a new Madill
record, improving the former
record set in 1975 by 2.7 seconds.
Cardy finished eighth out of
approximately 45 competitors.
The pole vault competition was
officiated by Doug Wood, the 1989
Canadian indoor pole vault cham-
pion and new indoor meet record
holder. Wood is a former Madill
athlete who was coached by Bob
Campbell.
Mike MacKay, a Grade 9 Madill
rookie, was congratulated by Wood
on his performance in the open
boys' pole vault. MacKay had a per-
sonal best performance, clearing 3.0
metres on his first attempt at this
height.
He went on to .obtain another
personal best by clearing 3.20
metres again on his first attempt.
In the Junior girls' shot put, Caro-
line Versteeg placed sixth in a field
of approximately 50 competitors
with a put of 9.55m.
Honorable mention goes to Der-
rick Evers, who placed fifteenth out
of 72 competitors in the 1,500m and
twentieth out of 79 competitors in
the 800m.
Congratulations are extended to
the Madill athletes on their perfor-
mances against top athletes from
across Ontario.
Broom and Stone
A successful curling season came
to a close last Saturday with an
enjoyable bonspiel and dance.
A total of 33 curlers took part
with the first game starting at 10
a.m. A delicious lunch was enjoyed
before another game at 2 p.m.
The over-all winner fol -the day
was the team of Jack Goodall,
Shirley Hanula, Howie Morton and
Janice Taylor. Everyone had a great
day and prizes were awarded to all.
At 7 p.m., three very special pre-
sentations were made. Ethel Gerrie
and. Stewart Beattie each received
honorary lifetime memberships and
were presented with lovely
plaques.
Also, the president-elect of the
Ontario Curling Association pre-
sented a plaque to Lloyd 'Casey"
Casemore commemorating the 4100
years that the local club hasbeen
associated with the provincial club.
As a point of interest, Mr. Case -
more is writing the history of Wing -
ham club and gave a brief run-
down. It certainly made everyone
proud to be a member of such a
great club.
All members thank those who
organized the draws, bonspiels and
junior curling throughout the sea-
son. Without these people, our club
would not be so successful.
The in -coming president is John
MacFadzean, a relative newcomer
to the area. We wish him well and
hope that everyone will be back
next year and even some new
members.
Have a good summer and see
you next November.

The first and second Wingham
Brownie packs had their annual
swim party at Kincardine recently.
Six leaders and three mothers also
took part.
The girls had a lot of fun and
thank the Wingham Optimist Club
for paying for the bus.
The second Wingham pack is
working on the World Friendship
Badge. The girls are learning about
Brownies in other lands and also
about the four world centres that
any of the Girl Guides can visit.
We are ending our badge work
by having a World Friendship pic-
