Howick and Harriston Midgets
opened a best -of -.five group final
playoff series at the Howick Com-
munity Centre on Sunday, March
19.
The two teams are evenly
matched but Harriston used their
specialty teams to gain a 3-1 victory
in the first game.
All goals were scored as a result
of power plays. Both teams
received excellent goaltending
throughout the contest. Peter Stew-
art of Howick and Jason Pilkington
of Harriston made many outstand-
ing stops.
The first period remained score-
less despite five penalties being
called.
Penalties were a great advantage
for Harriston in the second frame.
Todd Wilkie scored a power play
goal for Harriston when Howick
had two men in the penalty box.
Only 14, seconds elapsed when
Jeff Benninger scored another
power play goal. With only 13 sec-
onds left in the period a goal by Jeff
Camm gave Harriston a 3-0 lead,
Camm's goal was a short-handed
effort when he deked goaltender
Stewart out of position on a break
away,
The Howick squad made up for
the short-handed goal they gave up
at the end of the second period
with a power play goal after only
23 seconds of play in the third
frame°

Jason Jacobson's low blast from
the point beat Pilkington -cleanly.
Todd Templeman assisted. Despite
excellent scoring chances by both
teams, the two goaltenders stood
their ground and the game ended
with the same 3-1 score in Harris -
ton's favor.
Game Two
Harriston 5, Howick 4
A three goal burst in the third
period netted Harriston Midgets a
come -from -behind victory over
Howick in game two of the group
playoffs.
Harriston now leads the series
two games to none to take a stran-
gle hold on the best -of -five affair.
Donald Livermore combined
with Jaret Henhoeffer and Craig
King to give Howick an early 1-0
lead. Before the period ended suc-
cessive goals by Jeff Camm and Jeff
Newman gave Harriston a 2-1 lead.

Henhoeffer deked Jeff Dowler
cleanly for the goal Craig King also

edge.

The two previous goals were
scored by Jamie Williams and Jeff
Camm, with his second, Howick
pulled goaltender Peter Stewart in
the last minute of play and missed
two excellent scoring chances to. tie
the game only to be beaten by Jeff
Dowler in the Harriston net.
It was a cleanly played game
with each team collecting four
minor penalties.
Game Three
Harriston 3, Howick 2
Game three was typical playoff
hockey. Both `tearns recer ed good
goaltending and great defense
dominated. •
When the final : whistle _sounded
Harriston Midgets emerged as
WOAA group champions when
they eeked out a 3-2 victory.
It took Jamie Williams of Harris -
ton only 21 seconds to score on
Howick goalie Peter Stewart.
With only 1:03 left in the period
Williams scored his second marker
of the period to give Harriston a 2-0
lead.
The teams traded second period
goals. John Greig scored a power
play goal at 9:22 to narrow the gap
to 2-1. Steve MacGregor and Jason
acobson assisted Greig's goal.
Steven -MacDougall restored the
wo goal lead when he scored a
breakaway goal on Stewart.
Howick started fast in the third
period when Jaret Henhoeffer
tepped out of the penalty box and
roke in on Jason Pilkington all
lone to beat him cleanly with a
igh wrist shot. The Howick team
hen preceded to take six minutes
n penalties which hurt their
chances to even the count.
With Stewart pulled for the sec-
nd straight game Howick missed
t least four good opportunities to
score. Pilkington robbed King, Hen-
oeffer and Philip Livermore on
lose -in shots. The final score at the
uzzer was a 3-2 victory for Harris -

Belgrave Tykes
lose to Bayfield
The Belgrave Tykes lost a close
match to Bayfield recently.
Peter Irwin scored Belgrave's
only marker in the first period. The
final count was 2-1 for Bayfield.
In a match played earlier this
month, Belgrave downed Blyth 6-0.
Irwin scored four Belgrave goals
and Robbie McCee and Brian Sin-
clair added singles. Sinclair also
had an assist,
Tom Pfeiffer played in net for
llelgrave in both games.
