the Hawick Bantams 2-1
Greg McNevan's power play goal
late in the third period gave Harris -
ton a 5-4 win over the Howick Ban-
tams in game two of the group
playoff final.
The game was played in Harris -
ton on Monday, March 20. The vic-
tory gave Harriston a two games to
none lead in the best -of -five series.
As in game one Howick got into
penalty trouble. Harriston scored
three goals on the power play and
three times in the game Howick
had to play two men short. Howick
played the game with only nine
players and a 10 minute miscon-
duct penalty to Chris Reichard with
only eight seconds left in the sec-
ond period was a big blow for the
Howick squad.
Howick played- an excellent first
period of hockey and managed to
accumulate only one minor penalty.
The score of 3-1 in Howick's favor
certainly indicated the margin of
play they held in the period.
Steven Winkel had a great period
scoring two goals and assisting on
the third marker. Andrew Weber
scored a power play goal for the
other Howick score. Other players
drawing assists on the three goals
were Philip Livermore, Darryl
Johnson, Chris Reichard and Weber
Doug Richardson replied for Har-
riston.
The lone goal of the second peri-
od was scored by Greg McNevan to
reduce the lead to 3-2 for Howick.
Howick spent most of the second
period killing penalties as they
received six minor infractions and
the 10 minute misconduct to
Reichard.
Harriston played a very strong
third period and outscored Howick
3-1 to gain the 5-4 victory. Goals
went to Dennis Small, Brian Zabel
and McNevan with the winner.
Howick 7, Harriston 3
A four -goal performance by Ryan
Gallaher and a solid team effort
kept Howick Bantam's playoff
hopes alive with a well-deserved 7-
3 triumph over Harriston last
Wednesday evening at Howick.
Christian Feldskov came up with
a 'very strong effort in the Howick
net eiecially throughout the third
period.
Harriston started very fast with
Greg McNevan scoring after only
1:19 seconds of play in° the first
period. Howick recovered quickly
and scored four goals in the space
of 10 minutes.
Ryan Gallaher scored his first
goal of the night unassisted with a
wrap around from behind the net.
Steven Winkel scored from the slot
area after taking a pass from Philip
Livermore. Andrew Weber also
assisted.
Chris Reichard scored the third
goal on a hard slapshot after inter-
cepting a clearing pass at the blue -
line. Weber added the fourth mark-
er on a fine three way passing play
with Livermore and Winkel.
Gallaher registered his hat -trick
by scoring two second period goals.
The first was on a backhand shot to
the corner after Sheldon Dinsmore
and Reichard set up the play. The
second goal came on a Howick
power play when Gallaher banged
home a rebound off Kyle Wheeler's
hard shot. Brian Zabel scored Har-
riston's lone goal of the period.
The teams each scored once in
the third frame. Gallaher scored his
fourth with Dinsmore and Wheeler
assisting. Ryan Morrison beat Feld
skov for Harriston's third goal of
the evening.
Harriston now has a 2-1 series
lead in the best -of -five final.
BANTAM BANTER
High praises go the 4efenseman
Darryl Johnson for Howick in the 7-
3 win as he was on the ice for all
seven goals scored and none
against. Good work Darryl.. Both
teams have been hitting hard in the
series, but not always cleanly, as a
combined total of 60 penalties have
been called in the three games.
The Howick coaching staff feels
they must reduce their total of 37 if
they are going to win the series.
