Unlimited at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Dr. Dobson explained the impor- tance of establishing traditions in a family and the impact such cus- toms can have. He said they give family members self-esteem, a per- sOnal identity within the family, a eeling of belonging to a family unit and they promote togetherness. Interesting examples of traditions were given. These included estab- ishing distinct Thanksgiving, Christmas and birthday traditions, observing prayer and devotional times and making tapes as a record of special events. The second topic Dr. Dobson dis- ussed- concerned materialism in he home and the temptation to ver -indulge children. 'You cheat a child of pleasure if • you give him too much,' he said. If here is no need, there is no plea- ure. It takes courage to say no to a hild's requests when both parents nd children know that the simple se of a credit card could fulfill tost wants. However, Dr. Dobson said, it is more important for children to real - e that there is no direct relation - hip between the amount of thin ne acquires and the amount of enjoyment one receives from life.. Statistics quoted. by Ms. Lee clearly show that wife and child abuse has reached epidemic pro- portions. One in eight women will experience battering and one in four girls will be sexually abused before reaching the age of 18. Ms. Lee stressed the fact that this is not based upon genes, but on what we are taught and the way we are reared, so there is hope that it can be curtailed. She spoke of the reasons for wife battering, the impact it has on all concerned, the hope and confiden- tial help, support and safety pro- vided at the friendship house. Anyone needing assistance is advised to call 1-800-265-5506 for 24-hour crisis counselling assis- tance. Leslie Martin thanked Ms. Lee and presented her with a box of gifts for use at the house. • Mrs. Martin also announced recent purchases by J;0.Y. Unlimit- ed made possible through the col- lection Of grocery tapes - a rocking chair for use in , the church nursery and a tape recorder and tapes donated to the Wingham and Dis- trict Hospital's pediatrics depart- ment.
