Exchange student speaks
to Fordwich Institute
FORDWICH--An exchange stu-
dent from Puerto Rico was the
guest speaker when the Women's
Institute met recently. Ronitza Mari-
ano, who stays with Mr. and Mrs.
H. Gibson, was introduced by Mrs.
Gibson. She is 16 years old and
wanted to come to Canada. She
landed in Montreal last July and
stayed there a month. The Gibsons
were missing their three daughters
who are away from home and
inquired about an exchange student
and that is how Ronilza came to
Fordwich. She will stay until July.
Ronilza is a very friendly girl,
loves the snow, attends the United
Church where she sings in the choir
and attends Listowel District Sec-
ondary School. She showed slides
of Puerto Rico which _ has a popula
tion of well over a inion people,
yet the island is no large. Shown
was the large fort bu n a high
hill, with cannons to guard against
inimmuk
enemy ships; the pineapple trees
and native fruits; bamboo trees
whichreach across the roads on
either side until the tops touch and
slides of the rainforest. Ronilza also
showed photographs of her home
and family. She was thanked and
presented with a gift.
In memory of Mrs. John Free-
man, a yellow mum was donated to
the Institute by tier son.
Mrs. R. Sanderson led devotions
and told the story of St. Patrick who
was a devout man and performed
miracles. The motto, "We have a
task to build a better world", was
given by Mrs. B. Gibson who talked
about hate and the hurt and pain it
causes others, She stressed the
importance of a positive attitude.
The roll call, "Name a staple
food of another nation", was
answered to and, after a business
period, the meeting closed and
lunch was served by the hostess.
