dropped three straight games over
the past week to officially end their
playoffseason.
They finished the group round
robin with a loss to Mitchell, then
dropped their best -of -three series
against Clinton in two straight.
Mitchell 5, Wingham 3
The Atoms went to Mitchell last
Tuesday for the final game of their
group round robin series. Despite
being a mid -week game, the
Wingham skaters played most of the
contest as if they'd put in a hard
week at the local mines. -
Mitchell opened the scoring with
about a minute remaining in the first
period to take a 1 -0 -lead, then scored
two more in the second to go into the
final frame with a solid 3-0 lead.
In the third, Mitchell scored again
just over a minute into the period,
but just minutes later, Jeremy
Creeden struck for a couple of quick
goals on strong solo efforts.
His goals came just five seconds
apart as the Wingham marksmen
took the puck from the faceoff
following his first goal, and going in
alone to pull Wingham withintwo
goals of Mitchell.
Then, seven minutes later, Travis
Baier scored on a- 1(mg shot to pull
Wingham within one; and Setting up
a dramatic finish'.
Trailing by a goal and into the last
minute of the game, Wingham
pulled the goaltender for an extra
attacker, but defenceman Neil
Mowbray took a penalty with just
five seconds left when he pulled
down a Mitchell player who
appeared to break away at the
Mitchell blue line.
Mitchell then scored the clincher
into an empty net with just one
second left on the clock — although
several fans were quick to point out
that the clock wasn't started until
several seconds after the faceoff,
suggesting time had really run out
when the goal was scored.
That loss put Wingham up against
Clinton in a best -of -three series to
determine the finalists for the grOp
playoffs.
Clinton 4, Whigham I
Wingham hosted the first.gaine in
the series Saturday afteraa.(0-2 fed
this one saw the club play about ille
same as it did in Mitdhell 'the
previous Tuesday.
Clinton opened the scoring with
about four minutes left in the first
period as Rutledge pounc-ed on a
shot that rattled off the Wingham
goal post to drive the puck behind
goaltender Craig Baynton.
The second goal of thegame was a
picture -passing play. Josh Johnston
took the Ruck at the Wingham blue
line and tilt Mark Gibson with a rink -
wide pass. Gibson fed a pass to
Johnston just inside the Clinton line
and Johnston scored to tie the game.
The second and third periods,
'however, were all Clinton's. The
locals had a few chances, hut
nothing clicked and they spent ,st
of the game in their own end of the
rink.
• • ,
Clinton scored a pair of goals in
the second, one after Wingham
missed several scoring chances in
the Clinton end and the visitors
came back up the ice to score after
several chances of their Own.
The' third Clinton goal- came when
the shooter handcuffed the Wingham
goalie with a shot from the faceoff
circle.
There was only one goal in the
third period and that was scored by
Clinton in the dying minutes of the
game.
A Wingham clearing pass was
intercepted just outside the blue
line, and a slapshot from there
caught the Wipgham goaltender off
balance as Clinton went on to
register a 3-1 victory.
Clinton 5, Wingham 3
The second and final game of the
series was played Sunday afternottn
in Clinton,.and it was. the hest game.,
the Atoms have played in several
weeks.
They lost it 5-3, but were in the
