GAME 3
Howick 4, Ripley 2
In game three of the WOAA finals
the Howick Midgets avoided
elimination with an all-out team
effort in defeating Ripley by the
score of 4-2.
As in- the first two games, goalten-
ders Peter Stewart of Howick and
Kevin Taylor of Ripley played
dominant roles in the outcome. They
seemed to take turns making key
saves and often frustrating the
shooters.
In this game Howick started
quickly and never let up. Finally, the
team played forty-five minutes of
solid hockey.
Andrew Weber took a lead pass
from Jason Carriere and beat Tay-
lor cleanly from the right face-off
circle. A goal by Art Galloway at the
10:15 mark tied the score. With 2:31
left in the first period, John Greig
finished off a three-way passing play
with Todd Templeman and Jason
Jacobson to give Howick a 2-1 lead.
Howick recorded the only goal in
the second period to emerge with a 3-
1 lead. Jason Carriere finished• the
play to beat Taylor. Donald Liver-
more assisted Carriere's marker.
A penalty, too many men on the
ice, resulted irra power play goal by
Ripley's Dan Johnson after only two
minutes of play in the third period.
Luckily for Howick the two -goal lead
was restored after only 12 seconds of
play.
A hard slapshot from the point by
Jeff MacGregor found the net
through a maze of players. Temple-
man and Henhoeffer drew assists on
the MacGregor goal.
The last six minutes were tense for
the Howick squad when they took
four penalties. Goaltender Stewart,
along with some fine penalty killing
especially by defencemen Craig
King,„ Jason- Jacobson;_ ,.Rod , Mann
and Jeff MacGregor, certainly help-
ed in .the score remaining 4-2 in How-
ick's favor.
GAME 4-
Howick
Howick 5, Ripley 1
On Monday evening a two -goal
third period performance by left
winger Todd Templeman propelled
the Howick Midgets to a 5-1 victory
over Ripley. The _win evened the.
best-of-fiveseries at' two games
each.
Once again the netminding of Pe-
ter Stewart was a big factor in the
decision. In the first period Stewart
was especially sharp as Howick was
outshot consistently. Stewart held
the team in the game long enough
for them to settle down as the for-
wards and defencemen played ex-
tremely well in the last two periods.
Both goaltenders, Taylor and
Stewart, were sharp in the firstperi-
od as the 0-0 score would indicate.
Jason Carriere opened the scoring
in the second period for Howick by
notching a power play goal. Philip
Livermore and Andrew Weber as-
sisted on the marker.
Just over a minute later Steve
Twolan beat Stewart on a hard
slapshot. Howick exploded for two
goals in the final three minutes of
the second period. The Livermore
boys combined to give Howick a 2-1
lead. Philip banged home the re-
bound of brother Donald's hard
slapshot. With one minute left in the
period, Donald Livermore, With
some hard work around th net,
jammed a loose puck past Taylor.
John Greig and Todd Templeman
drew assists.
Templeman's two unanswer
third period goal scaled the
for Howick. Templeman, tipped in
his first'goal off a John Orelg Shot
front the point. Janet Reilliiceffer
assisted. Tefnplemab's peOirof goal
was also deflected past Taylor after
a hard shot from . the point from
Jason Jacobson's low •blast. It was a
power play effort:The,54 victory set
the stage for a deciding fife game.
A big advantage for HoV,
game was the team took only
penalties.
GAME '5
Ripley 2, Howicki
A great comeback by the Howick
Midgets was stopped short by a fast
skating Ripley squad Wednesday
evening. The game was played be-
fore the largest crowd of the season
at the Howick Community Centre.
The many fans for both teams
were treated to a great hockey game.
as only four penalties were called
throughout the fast -paced contest.
Each team received two minor pen-
alties.
Once again goaltenders Peter
Stewart and Kevin Taylor held the
shooters scoreless in the first period.
Ripley took advantage of two cost-
ly errors in the second period to
score two unanswered goals. The
first was scored by Dan Johnson
when Howick had a chance to clear
the puck out of their own end. With
1:58 left in the period Steve Twolan
scored a power play goal.
The Howick boys never gave up
throughout the third period despite
the determined forchecking and
backchecking of the Ripley team. At
the five-minute mark Todd Temple-
man took a Jaret Henhoeffer pass to
beat Taylor cleanly and win the
shutout.
Howick had at least five great op-
portunities to score in the last ten
minutes but Taylor always came up
with the big stop to preserve the 2-1
victory in the deciding game for the
WOAA championship.
RON'S ROUNDUP
One thing can be said of the effort
by the Howick boys -- they never
gave up and worked hard to the last
whistle.
Both teams are to be congratu-
lated on their fine hockey skills and
good sportsmanship throughout the
series. The teams played very even
as the number of goals for and
against indicated In five games
Howick otitscored Ripley 15-12...
Ripley now advances into OMHA
play against Grand Valley. Howick
drops back into group playoffs. At.
this writing the team is 'unknown.
