Wingham's Optimist Atoms rolled
to an 8-5 win over Milverton this past
Saturday to record the second win in
their group playoff preliminaries.
Josh Johnston led the Wingham
attack with three goals and an
assist. Jeremy Creeden, Travis
Baier and Neil Mowbray recorded
three-point performances as well.
The..gasne starte on: a sour note,

three goals notched in the first
period.
The first came when the Wingham
defense coughed up the puck in front
of the net. The second was a shot
from the point, which deflected off a
Wingham player and the third came
on a shot Wingham's netminder got
a piece of, but notenough.
;,Ii;the second, thelocals came out
of their slumber party to score five
unanswered goals. Shawn Walker
got the first one, assisted by Arley
Pautler and Mowbray.
Another shot from the point by
Mowbray led to the second Wingham
goal, scored by Johnston, with the
other assist going to Baler. The tying
goal was scored by Creeden,
assisted by Johnston and Mowbray.
The go-ahead marker came from
Pautler, assisted by Creeden.
Then, with 37 seconds left in the
second, Todd Edgar scored on a goal
set up by Beier and Patrick Magee.
Going into the third period with a
5-3. lead seemed to make the
Wingham boys a little over
confident. Milverton came back with
two quick goals to tie before the final
frame was much more than two
minutes old.
Both goals caught the Wingham
netminder off his angles — the shots
going to the far side on both.
Baier put Wingham ahead four
minutes later with an unassisted
goal.. Then Johnston got his second
of the night, a power -play goal,
assisted by Mark Gibson.
And with about four minutes left,
Johnston finished up the hat -trick
with a goal set up by Creeden.
A total of 16 minutes in penalties
were handed out in this game — six

get frustrated as the game went on,
with several roughing calls and a
few goal -crease plays which could
