• BELGRAVE — A large congre-
gation was in attendance for the
Sunday morning service Feb. 19 at
Knox United Church, when Chil-
dren's Sunday was observed and a
special service of dedication took
place. A new ivory Laurentian dam-
ask antependium and communion
table runner of tapestry, embossed
in -gold, were in place for tke service.
A crown of thorns encircles the
letters, IHS, the Greek letters for the
name of Christ, as the symbol on the
antependium. A Celtic cross em-
broidered near each end of the
runner add to its beauty and signi-
ficance and gold fringe further en-
hances each of the purchases.
These beautiful gifts are a dona-
tion made .through the memorial
fund. Rev. John G. Roberts observed
a short period of silence in memory
of deceased members, followedby a
dedication service, that the gifts
may be used to the glory of God, for
the beautification of the sanctuary
and as symbols of memoriam'of
loved ones.
Mr. Roberts conducted the ser-
vice, using scripture readings from
St. Matthew's Gospel, relating The

The 12 -member children's chair
sang "Love, the Lord", with organ
accompaniment by Mrs. George
Procter, then, with s the toddlers of
the congregation,. 'occupied the
central front seats to receive the
minister's message. It followed a
question -add -answer form related to
Lent. He queried, "What season is
being celebrated? When did Lent
begin? What day precedes Ash Wed-
nesday?" He explained that Mardi 1
Gras means Fat Tuesday and it is
the day people feast prior to the 40 -
day Lenten fast, Ash , Wednesday
was construed from the sackcloth
and ashes repentance. People are
sorry for their misdeeds so they live
differently during Lent.
Lent, in early times, lasted 40
hours, representative of the duration
of Jesus' entombment. At a later
date the time was lengthened to 40
days. This is a period to prepare for
a new, different, repentant life.
The singing Of the benediction by
the choir concluded the service.
