In Thursday's match -up, the second meeting between the two clubs, Matt Ehnslie came up strong for the Legion 'Peewees in net and Ryan Leibold had a great game in a forechecking role. J. Balzer a! J. Leen had etr g offensive games. G. T. Welch was a force on ice, repeatedly carrying the puck out of the Wingham defensive zone to counter Mitchell's forechecking coverage of their breakout pattern. S. Pegg was effective on defense, especially since the team felt the absence of M. Poulin. They came through with flying colors defensively, while adding_ one goal and four assists offensively. Balzer led the points parade with one goal and two assists. Lane got lots of target practice and was rewarded with two goals. Pegg had one goal and one assist, while Welch recorded two assists and Jason Evans notched one assist. Brett°Sangster's unassisted, Ogen - net goal sealed the win for, the -Legion lads. The last four minutes of the game were • a nightmare for the 'Legion cnacin staff. Leading 4-1, the tads took a series of penalties that left them playing two inen short. During this: time, Mitchel capitalized with two power -play goals to draw within one. The lavas bent, but did not break. The clincher came with thegame all but over, as Sangster recorded the fifth goal with one second remaining on the clock. Mitchell 3, Wingham 2 The opening game of the best-of- five est-offive group playoff opened with a 3-2 overtime loss to Mitchell. For three periods, the Legion PeeWees played a close -checking, yet offensive style of hockey. Late in the first period, Mitchell opened the scoring by denting the twine behind Rob Johnston in the Wingham net. Matthew Hunter evened the score two minutes later with E. Deyell and J. Lane acquiring the assists. Periods two and three were Legion Peewees down Harriston in exhibition play The Wingham Legion PeeWees downed Harriston 4-2 in an ex- hibition match last Saturday eve- ning. Wingham had a , decided edge in play over the three periods. If not for Harriston goaltender Kelly Madden, the Wingham score could easily have been in the double figures. Jonathon Balzer has been the leading point -getter for Wingham for the last two games in a row. He has played his position well, has been aggressive in his forechecking and sometimes overly aggressive in his backchecking. Once again Ryan Leibold was a positive force on the ice for the Legion lads. Jason Evans created mayhem when he was on the ice, diving in and out of bodies and receiving the lion's share of the bruises. The lads started by quickly carrying the play to the Harriston zone and played a good deal of the game in their end of the ice. G. T. Welch scored at the three-minute mark of the opening period on a play that startedin the Wingliatn end on a quick give -and -go with Balzer. After two periods of play, the score was knotted at one each. At the mid -point of the third period, Leibold deflected in a point shot from Evans. Less than a minute later, the score was tied again. The winning goal was netted by Balzer from Leibold, Balzer scored an insurance goal with two minutes left in the game with an assist going to Brett Sangster: Wingham athletes earn .__personal bests atMeet Athletes representing the Wingham Optimist Track and Field Club competed in the Ontario Bantam, Midget and Junior cham- pionships in Toronto last weekend.. Over 600 athletes took part in the two-day meet. Natascha 1Vluscheid earned two peraoal best performances with a leap of 4.52 metres in the Bantam girls' Tong jump to capture sixth place. In the 200m, she took 28.24 seconds to complete the distance, another personal best. Julie Lisle, competing as a Ban- tam, earned fourth place in the 80m hurdles (10.95 sec.), P.B. and fourth in the shot put at 6.94in, another personal best. She also jumped 4.16m and ran the 200m in 30.12 sec., P.B. Shawn Gedcke, in his first year in the Bantam long jump, recorded a 4.37m jump. In the 400m, he completed the distance in 1:09.5 minutes. In his first year:'as a Midget, Derrick Evers ran two excellent dis- tance races, clocking4:49 minutes hi the 1,500m, P.B: and 10:30 min, in the 3,06Oni. In his first year as a Junior, Adam Armstrong ran a strong 800m race in 2:07.5 inin., P.B. and also competed the 1,500rn in 5:13 nein. This meet marks the end of the r indoor season for the Bantams, Midgets and Juniors. The Mites, Tykes and Atoms compete in the Ontario championships March 5 in Toronto. Nuggets lose 3-216 Bel ore Wingham Kentucky Nuggets lost a close 3-2 game to Belmore last week. Belmore opened the scoring in the game as Kevin Wright notched what proved to be the only goal of the first period. In the second period, Tyler Huff- man scored his first of two for Wing - ham, assisted 'by Philip Deans and Ryan Robinson. Belmore then picked up another goal to round out the scoring for the period. In the third, Belmore scored again to go head by two, but Wingham bounced right back to make it a close game as Huffman scored un- assisted at the 4:03 mark. Nugget Notes: Robert Warwick came up with a strong performance in the net for the Kentucky Nuggets. Belmore comes to Wingham► to face the Nuggets on Tuesday night.
