The Wiingha u Peewees
are tied in theirWOAA playoff series
with Mitchell, losing the first match
3-2, but defeating Mitchell 5.3 last
Thursday.
In Thursday's match -up, the
second meeting between the two
clubs, Matt Ehnslie came up strong
for the Legion 'Peewees in net and
Ryan Leibold had a great game in a
forechecking role.
J. Balzer a! J. Leen had etr g
offensive games. G. T. Welch was a
force on ice, repeatedly carrying the
puck out of the Wingham defensive
zone to counter Mitchell's
forechecking coverage of their
breakout pattern.
S. Pegg was effective on defense,
especially since the team felt the
absence of M. Poulin. They came
through with flying colors
defensively, while adding_ one goal
and four assists offensively.
Balzer led the points parade with
one goal and two assists. Lane got
lots of target practice and was
rewarded with two goals. Pegg had
one goal and one assist, while Welch
recorded two assists and Jason
Evans notched one assist.
Brett°Sangster's unassisted, Ogen -
net goal sealed the win for, the
-Legion lads.
The last four minutes of the game
were • a nightmare for the 'Legion
cnacin staff. Leading 4-1, the tads
took a series of penalties that left
them playing two inen short. During
this: time, Mitchel capitalized with
two power -play goals to draw within
one.
The lavas bent, but did not break.
The clincher came with thegame all
but over, as Sangster recorded the
fifth goal with one second remaining
on the clock.
Mitchell 3, Wingham 2
The opening game of the best-of-
five
est-offive group playoff opened with a 3-2
overtime loss to Mitchell.
For three periods, the Legion
PeeWees played a close -checking,
yet offensive style of hockey.
Late in the first period, Mitchell
opened the scoring by denting the
twine behind Rob Johnston in the
Wingham net.
Matthew Hunter evened the score
two minutes later with E. Deyell and
J. Lane acquiring the assists.
Periods two and three were
Legion Peewees down
Harriston in exhibition play
The Wingham Legion PeeWees
downed Harriston 4-2 in an ex-
hibition match last Saturday eve-
ning.
Wingham had a , decided edge in
play over the three periods. If not for
Harriston goaltender Kelly Madden,
the Wingham score could easily
have been in the double figures.
Jonathon Balzer has been the
leading point -getter for Wingham
for the last two games in a row. He
has played his position well, has
been aggressive in his forechecking
and sometimes overly aggressive in
his backchecking.
Once again Ryan Leibold was a
positive force on the ice for the
Legion lads. Jason Evans created
mayhem when he was on the ice,
diving in and out of bodies and
receiving the lion's share of the
bruises.
The lads started by quickly
carrying the play to the Harriston
zone and played a good deal of the
game in their end of the ice. G. T.
Welch scored at the three-minute
mark of the opening period on a play
that startedin the Wingliatn end on a
quick give -and -go with Balzer.
After two periods of play, the
score was knotted at one each. At the
mid -point of the third period,
Leibold deflected in a point shot
from Evans. Less than a minute
later, the score was tied again.
The winning goal was netted by
Balzer from Leibold, Balzer scored
an insurance goal with two minutes
left in the game with an assist going
to Brett Sangster:
