Optimist Atoms -are now
one andone in grouppial
The Wingham Optimist Atoms
have one win and one loss so far in
their group preliminary playoff
round.
It's a four -game round — one
game against each of the four
opponents with the top three teams
advancing. The Atoms have lost to
Clinton and defeated Goderich.
They'll be playing Milverton
Saturday and Mitchell next Tuesday
to wrap up the first round.
Travis Baier and Jeremy Creeden
had two- goals each tin lead Wingham
to a 5-4 comeback win over Goderich
in Wingham last Saturday.
Goderich jumped into a 2-0 lead in
the first period before Wingham
finally hit the scoreboard. And it was
a strong, short-handed effort by Josh
Johnston which got them started.
Johnston picked up the puck behind
the Goderich goal, spun around the
other side and back -handed a shot
past a surprised Goderich
netminder to make the score 2-1 for
Wingham.
Assists on that, went to Neil
Mowbray and Baier.
The locals tied the game early in
the second when Baier got the first
of his two goals, assisted by Arley
Pautler and Jeff King. Creeden's
first goal of the game, assisted by
Johnston, came at about the nine -
minute mark of the second to put
Now! The Standard Trust
Wingham up 3-2.
But Gederich came hack with a
power -play goal — Todd Edgar in
the box on a tripping call — to tie the
game with about five minutes left in
the second, sending the teams into
the third tied at three.
About three minutes into the final
frame, Wingham's Baier got his
second of the game, assisted by
Mark Gibson , 1 Patrick Magee, to
put the locals up by one.
Then, with Magee serving an
interference penalty, Goderich tied
the game at 5:33 of the third. But
Creeden took the puck from the
ensuing face-off, carried it into the
Goderich end and handcuffed the
C oderich goalie with a long shot to
give Wingham a 5-4 lead.
That was the goal that proved to
be the winner as the locals hung on
for their first win in two preliminary
playoff games.
Clinton 3, Wingham 2
Earlier in the week, the Optimist
Atoms travelled to Clinton and came
home with a 3-2 loss.
The Atoms started well hitting
for a goal less than two minutes into
the game. Pautler got that one,
assisted by Gibson and Mowbray.
Johnston gave Wingham a 2-0 lead
on a goal assisted by Baier at 12:40
of the first.

start fading in the second. Clinton
scored at 1:09 of tile second to pull
within one of the visitors. With
Magee in the sin -bin for holding,
Clinton scored a power -play goal at
8:34 of the second, sending the two
teams to the dressing room tied at
two.
The first five minutes of the third
was spent in the Wingham end as the
Optimist Atoms struggled to hold off
a strong Clinton attack. They did a
solid_job _of -shot -blocking, - but just
couldn't get the puck out of their own
end.
That led to Clinton getting its third
goal at 9:030 And that was the
winner.
Wingham a few more forays into
the Clinton end and Clinton had a
few more good chances around the
Wingham net, but there was no more
scoring and the, game ended in a 3-2
loss for Wingham.
ATOM NOTES— These two games
were almost mirror opposites with
Wingham blowing a lead in the first
one, then making a big comeback in
the second.
We're seeing some strong offen-
sive performances in recent games
from the big guns — Creeden, Baier
and Johnston. The defense and goal-
tending is showing sparks, but still
running into trouble clearing the
- zone and handling rebounds, trouble
which -usually- ends up with goals
against.
Based on regular -season records,
the Atoms should be able to show
well in theft% next two games, but
they've shown the ability in the past
to disprove predictions like this, so
we're not going to make any until the
games are over.
