hosts meeting
GORRIE—Mrs. Gordon Moir
hosted the meeting of the Women's
Missionary Society of Knox
Presbyterian Church. Mrs. James
Robinson opened the meeting with
the poem, "Three Gates" and a
meditation entitled "Open My
Eyes". All joined in singing a hymn
and Mrs. Robinson led in prayer.
The roll call was answered with a
verse of scripture about the poor and
nine visits were reported. A donation
was sent to the 75th Anniversary
Travel Fund. Mrs. Alvin Mundell
reported on the annual meeting of
Maitland Presbyterial. In response
to a letter from the Fordwich Village
Nursing Home, it was agreed that
Mrs. Robinson should telephone to
see if July 12 is a suitable date to
visit there.
The hymn, "Open My Eyes",
fittingly introduced the study,
"Keeping Covenant with the Poor".
The meaning of the word,
"covenant", was explored, with
many examples from the books of
the law: Exodus, Leviticus and
Deuteronomy. God blesses His
people; in return He Asks for their
obedience, trust and faith.
Two historical passages were
studied which record the treatment
of the poor. In Jeremiah 34, where
the covenant is broken, war, disease
and famine result. When the people
do as they had promised in
Nehemiah 5, the Israelites are
liberated from oppression and
suffering, liberated for community
and mutual responsibility.
The meeting closed with a hymn
and prayer by Mrs. David Lockie. A
time of fellowship concluded a
profitable evening of Bible study.
WOMEN? DEMAND VOTE!
In March of 1914, women in
Wingham and surrounding district
were demanding the vote. They
were determined, however, to
pursue mild measures, believing
that such a course would prove more
effective than the militant tactics Of
their sisters in the old country who
were conducting hunger strikes and
riotous outbreaks.
