Creeden lea
t
to 5042 win over Clin
Centre . Jeremy Creeden scored
two goals in the final minute of the
game to round out his hat: trick and
give the Wingham Optimist Atams a-
5-2 win over Clinton. in an exhibition
game last Saturday.
The Atoms jumped out to an early
3-0 lead in the first two periods.
Travis Baier scored the first goal
early in the opening period, assisted
by Mark Gibson and Patrick Magee
and Creeden got his first of the after-
noon with only ot}e second left in the
first period.
The locals also got the only goal of
the middle period as Arley Pautler
stuffed a backhander over the
Clinton goaltender's glove from
close range. Baier drew the assist.
With the opening of the third
period, however, came a let -down by
Wingham and a resurgence by
Clinton.
The visitors put two goals up on
theboard to narrow the gap .to 3-2,
both markers notched by Chad
Chipchase.
The narrow score set up a frantic
final three minutes as Wingham
struggled to hang on to the win and
Cbitonfought for the equalizer.
:'...Wm goaltender
7,gil,anaged to get his
ohs ned shot headed for
th+e corner of the net and covered up
on the rebound to keep his team
ahead.
With about 30 seconds left in the
game, Mark Gibson fired a long shot
at the Clinton netminder who.
stopped it and thought he had it
covered, but Creeden found the loose
puck and fired it between the
goalie's legs and into the net.
Creederf then finished off his
trick — and Clinton — with anot
goal about 20 seconds later, assisted
by Shawn Walker and Todd Edgar.
That made the final score 5-2 for
Wingham, a lot closer on the ice than
it was on the scoreboard.
The Optimist Atoms return to
Clinton tonight for the other half of
this exhibition home -and -home
series.
Atom Notes: After finishing the
regular season on a down note and
dropping their playoff series against
Durham in three straight games, the
Optimist Atoms appear to be back
on
on the winning track.
They've had trouble with Clinton.
all season, and this was a win they
needed to get Wain form for group:.
playoffs and tournarnetrt play yet to
cone.
