The Ironmen now meet Mount Forest in the semi-finals. Home games are slated for Saturday night and Sunday. (Photo by Peggy Routley) The Wingham Ironmen Junior club swept the Goderich Sailors three straight gammas in a best -of. five playoff series last week to advance to semi-final league play. The Ironmen will come up against the Mount Forest Patriots, who also swept their series with the Port Elgin Bears, In game one last Thursday eve- ning, the Ironmen outscored their opponents 8-2, with Wingham jumping into an early, short-handed lead Iess than five minutes into the game_ when Paul Brophy - won the draw back to defenseman Jeff Walden, whose hard shot made its way past Sailor goalie Jeff Roy. The Ironmen's second short- handed goal came off the stick of Brad Murray when he was right there to net the rebound Roy fed him. Brophy got that one back lesstban a minute later when he scored on a back -handed effort with Jamie Robinson and Joe Walker assisting. Brad Priestap netted a mer=play goal at 12:09 of the middleframe for. the Ironmen with Sandy McDonald. and Darrell Durnin assisting. Durnin potted another short-handed goal when he was parked at the side of thenet to send home a J. C. Hewitt pass with -Bevin Flett also. assisting. The Sailors again were the first to light up the scoreboard in the final frame with a goal off the stick of Jason Vanderheyden. Richard Bow- man's shot from the point had the Sailor net bulging with Paul Tolton and Mark McBride assisting at 10:15 of the final frame. Brophy netted another power -play goal with Walker and Hewitt assisting and Ironman Scott Hackett completed the scoring for Wingham with 3:50 remaining in the game. Toiton drew ail assist. Game two was played in Goderich last Friday evening. This proved to be a much closer contest with the Ironmen coming from behind to upset the Sailors 5-4. The Sailors notched the game's first marker just two minutes into the game when Steve Hutchins' shot found its:way_past the Ironmen net - Minder. MurraY F et-Minder.Murray! Oxton _w: - Hewitt replied to that with a shot from the point on the power play with Flett assisting. Goderich went up ,by a pair of goals before Hewitt notched his second of the game to put the Ironmen within one before period's end. The Sailors only wasted 28 seconds before Dean Lawrie potted his second of the game to put the Sailors up by a pair. However, Bowman's •slap -shot from ..the high slot -had Sailor: goalie: Roy beaten with Brophy and McDonald assisting. McDonald got the tying goal when he skated around the Goderich defense and put one up high on the stick side with only 40 seconds remaining inthe period and Jason Goodall drawing the assist. The only scoring in the third and the eventual game -winner came off the stick of Goodall after Flett sent him a rink -wide pass. His shot from the point proved too much for Roy to handle. Game three was played at home Sunday in front of a fairly good crowd with the Ironmen coming out on top 9-4. Durnin opened the scoring at 13:30 of the opening frame with McDonald and Murray assisting. The Sailors got that one back just 59 seconds later while on the power play with a goal by Byron Bowman. Winghkm again took the lead when Murray hit McDonald with a pass. He carried the puck into the Goderich end and passed it to Durnin, who stuck it in the open net. Murray won the draw back to McDonald, whose shot from the point had Sailor goalie Roy beaten. Brett Martin rounded out the scoring for Wingham -in the opening period when he made no mistake on his shorthanded breakaway with Bowman assisting. McDonald was credited with Wingham's next goal that was scored off the Sailor defenseman. Ironmen, but were too :littIe, too late: With only 13 seconds remaining in the series, Murray finished it off with McDonald assisting. IRON MARKERS -- It was nice to see both teams stick to their game, resulting in a good., clean series without suffering any injuries. The Ironmen now can head into the next series -with a full, roster. , Game two was by far the best match of the series with Goderich giving it their` all in front of their home fans. Credit goes to the Ironmen defense which accounted for all five goals in the game. Jamie Good rolled the boys' high single of 125 and the high double of 240. BANTAMS & JUNIOI{S The Peaches lead the league with 73, the Plums have 61, the Grapes, 53, the Pears and the Berries, 36 and the Apples, 26. Lori Morrison rolled the girls' high single of 139 and the high double of 254, while Jeremy Hickey had the boys' high single of 184 and the high double of 337.
