Optimist Novices win two
in weekend hockey action
The Wingham Optimist Novice
team came up big with two wins in
action over the weekend.
Against Blyth on Saturday, the
Novices skated to a 5-1 victory and
then in an exhibition match on
Sunday handed Howick an 8-0
shutout.
Wingham 5, Blyth 1
Blyth came to Wingham for a
rematch after ha ng the Optimist
Novices an earlier aefeat in Myth.
Wingham carne out very strong in
the first period and ° hit the
scoresheet on a goal by Trevor
Huffman, assisted by Jamie Good.
The score went to 2-0 in
Wingham's favor when Steven Mow-
bray scored an unassisted marker.
In the second period, Blyth scored
on a goal by Mark Wilson, assisted
by Trent Richmond, but that was the
last time that Blyth would get the
puck behind Michael King who
played a good game in the Wingham
net.
Wingham then scored three un-
answered and unassisted goals to
put the victory on ice.
Jarret Griffith scored two of the
rnarkers with Good banging home
the other.
Wingham 8, Howick 0
Howick came to town for an ex-
hibition game Sunday and after the
thumping they laid on Wingham last
year, the local team was ready for
the contest.
Wingliaro can out strong and at
the end of the first period were
ahead 3-0 on two goals by Griffith
and one by Laing. Assists went to
Skinn, Mowbray and Huffman.
In the second period, Mowbray
scored on an assist from Skinn to
boost the score to 4-0.
In the third, Wingham fired home
four more with the first corning off
the stick of Huffman, assisted by
Laing and Good. - -
Griffith then got his third for the
hat trick with Michael Remington
and Dean Walker drawing assists.
Goals by Mowbray on an assist
from Huffman, and Mitchell Skinn
on an assist from Laing rounded out
the scoring.
Michael King, with another fine
performance earned the shutout.
Although he wasn't kept too busy, he
was there when his teammates
needed him.
Novice Notes: The Optimist Nov-
ices played two games of goOd
hockey with fine performances
turned in by the forwards and de-
fencemen as well. Jarret Griffith
played very well, in both games.
Next game is against Harriston at
Lockridge Memorial Arena at 5 p.m.
on Saturday, the first game of a best-
of -five playoff series. Thanks to the

Nuggets win two, lose one
in recent tournament play
• Wingham Kentucky Nuggets play-
ed well during a tournament at
Howick, picking up two wins against
one loss in the three games they
played.
Nuggets lost their first game to
Clinton by one goal in a 6-5 contest.
Winghatn's Philip- Deans opened
the scoring, assisted by Scott
McPherson and Matthew Merkley,
only to see Clinton come back and tie
the game.
The Nuggets then scored two
quick goals by_ McPherson and John
Martin to take a 3-1 lead into the
second period, but again Clinton
bounced back to tie it and then went
ahead 4-3.
Wingham scored two more goals
by Merkley and Steve Carter, only to
have Clinton once more come o6 to
win the game in the third period:
In the next two games, the Nug-
gets shut out Listowel and
Pahnerstonby 2-0 and 6-0 counts.

Bridge Motors—squeaked by
Staintons 3-2 la.st week hi Wingham
Industrial Hockey League action,
Bridge marksmen were Phil
Beard, Steve MacKay and Jim
Noble. Tem Chester and Carl Bondi
replied for Staintons.
The Advance4imes Newsboys
downed Crawford Motors 9-3. Brad
Moore led the attack with four goals
for the Newsboys, while Terry
Walker and Bill Grant added tWo
-apiece and Rick Jacklin rounded out
the scoring with a single.
Amy Spivey, Art Clark and Bill
Brophy scored for Crawfords.
In the well -played Listowel game,
Wingham's goals were scored by
Philip Deans and Steve Carter with
assists going to Martin.
Against ?almerston, McPherson,
Martin, Andrew Laing, Tyler
Huffman each fired home a goal
while Carter notched two.
Assists were recorded by Merkley,
Martin, Carter and Hiiffman, all
with two,
Nugget News: Robert Warwick
played well in the Nugget net
throughout the tournament. Adam
Lachance returned to the lineup
following a bout with the flu. The
Nuggets expressed thanks to Mat-
thew Merkley who filled in for
missing players. Next game for the
Nuggets is in Lucknow tonight at
seven o'clock.
Sacred Heart

There were 12 tables in play at the
Sacred Heart shoot party held last

Prizes for high man and high lady

Man) and Doris Michie ' The low
man was Steve Trapp, while Miry
Rehr' was low lady.
Kay McCormick took top honors
for most shoot, Consolation prizes
went to Sara Anstett, Gert Reavie,
Bill Willis and C. W. Hanna.

Schmidt, Mary McGlynn and Col-
leen Schenk,

Wingham forwards were having a

Wingham's speedy centre, ciwis
Alexander, came the closest to
getting the Shoppers on the
scoresheet in the contest, but was
stopped twice from close range with
less than five minutes to go.,
The final score in this one was 7-0
for Mildmay.
On Sunday the Shoppers hosted
Hanover and came clown with an
ailment that has plagued them all
season: "Third -Period Narcolep-
sy.”.
Although beaten soundly by
Hanover in a previous encounter at
the "Lockridge", the Shoppers came
out flying and went to the dressing
room after two frames with a 5-3
Alexander and Kevin Hogg led the
way for the Shoppers with two goals
each, with Jeremy Hickey adding I
the other as well as picking up two
assists,
Alexander, Reagan LeitioK and --
Scott Allison also added assists. •

Hanover. They outshot the Shoppers
16-5 and outscored them 4-0. Two of
those goals came on breakaways
and one was an empty-netter after
Wingham had pulled its goalie for an
extra attacker in the final minute.
That made the final 7-5 for Hanover.
There were -two other noteworthy
items to come out of this game. One
was the excellent blueline work of
defenseman Danny Gusso: He was
particularly sharp on a couple of
occasions in the second period.
Then there was the hit, uninten-
tional, of course, laid on by the

where in Hanover, there is a young-
ster who won't "Missy" Wingham
one bit.
The Shoppers are back in action
this weekend as they hoist Mount
Forest Thursday at 6 p.M. and -
Durham Sunday at 545 p.m. "
