The locals played most of the first two periods in very low gear, letting the visitors roll up a 5-1 lead entering the third period. Durham's first goal carne less than two minutes into the game when Ryan Hollister went through most of the Wingham checkers and deked goaltender Craig Baynton. About four minutes later, Hollister set up teammate David Galbraith to put Durham ahead 2-0. In the second, Wingham finally got on the scoreboard with a neat play in front of the net by Josh Johnston, who netted a centering pass from Mark Gibson to make it 2-1, but the • visitors , came back with three inianswered goals before the second period was over. Hollister got two of the Durham markers while Paul Brown scored the third. ,Trailing 5-1 going into the final frame, the Atoms seemed suddenly to realize they were in a playoff hockey game and put their second goal of the game on the board less than two minutes into the period, an unassisted marker by Gibson. Jeremy Creeden narrowed the Durham lead tes8-3 a few minutes later on a goal assisted by Johnston and with about five minutes left in the pericfd, Gibson got his second of the game, assisted by Johnston. While they did get their chances, the Wingham players couldn't get the tying marker, however, as Dur- ham held the fort well and kept the play close enough to the Wingham end; in the final period that the locals neverdid get a chance to pull the goaltender for an extra attacker. Game Two in the best -of -five series is set for Durham Thursday night with. Game Three back in Wingham at Lockridge Memorial Arena on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Meanwhile, in regular group play, the Atoms rebounded for a 4-2 win over Goderich last Thursday night. With two of their 13 players out of action, the Atoms seemed slow off the mark in this road game. The only score in a sluggish first period was by Goderich's Steve Linklater, who broke in on goal and put the puck into the low corner on Craig Baynton's glove side. • The Optimist Atoms got off the mark a bit quicker in the second period as Jeremy Creeden forced the Goderich goaltender to make a good blocker stop on a Ugh shot when he broke through the defence early in the second frame. However, it was defenceman Neil wbray who finally put Wingham or the scoreboard with just over three minutes left in the period.
