Atoms
in playoff series
Wingham's Optimist Atoms lost 5-
4 in the opening game of their befit -
of -five playoff series against Dur-
ham this past weekend.
The locals played most of the first
two periods in very low gear, letting
the visitors roll up a 5-1 lead entering
the third period.
Durham's first goal carne less
than two minutes into the game
when Ryan Hollister went through
most of the Wingham checkers and
deked goaltender Craig Baynton.
About four minutes later, Hollister
set up teammate David Galbraith to
put Durham ahead 2-0.
In the second, Wingham finally got
on the scoreboard with a neat play in
front of the net by Josh Johnston,
who netted a centering pass from
Mark Gibson to make it 2-1, but the
• visitors , came back with three
inianswered goals before the second
period was over.
Hollister got two of the Durham
markers while Paul Brown scored
the third.
,Trailing 5-1 going into the final
frame, the Atoms seemed suddenly
to realize they were in a playoff
hockey game and put their second
goal of the game on the board less
than two minutes into the period, an
unassisted marker by Gibson.
Jeremy Creeden narrowed the
Durham lead tes8-3 a few minutes
later on a goal assisted by Johnston
and with about five minutes left in
the pericfd, Gibson got his second of
the game, assisted by Johnston.
While they did get their chances,
the Wingham players couldn't get
the tying marker, however, as Dur-
ham held the fort well and kept the
play close enough to the Wingham
end; in the final period that the locals
neverdid get a chance to pull the
goaltender for an extra attacker.
Game Two in the best -of -five
series is set for Durham Thursday
night with. Game Three back in
Wingham at Lockridge Memorial
Arena on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, in regular group play,
the Atoms rebounded for a 4-2 win
over Goderich last Thursday night.
With two of their 13 players out of
action, the Atoms seemed slow off
the mark in this road game.
The only score in a sluggish first
period was by Goderich's Steve
Linklater, who broke in on goal and
put the puck into the low corner on
Craig Baynton's glove side.
• The Optimist Atoms got off the
mark a bit quicker in the second
period as Jeremy Creeden forced
the Goderich goaltender to make a
good blocker stop on a Ugh shot
when he broke through the defence
early in the second frame.
However, it was defenceman Neil
wbray who finally put Wingham
or the scoreboard with just over
three minutes left in the period.

Spivey and Steve -Casliek.
\
Mowbray'SsOoillt Shot deflected off
a Goderich defender into the net.
Creeden and Mark Gibson drew
assists on the power -play goal.
About one minute later, Travis
Baier beat the Goderich goalie on an
ice -level shot to give Wingham a 2-1
lead, Shawn Walker and Josh
Johnston drew the assists.
Goderich tied the score with just
over a minute remaining in the
second period on Linklater's second
of the game catching the far corner
on a low shot from the right face-off
circle.
The third period was all
Wingham's, with two 09
Creeden wrapping 474:
Creeden' a tlrat cape al
minutes into the final frame as li
took the puck from, his own end, feea
several Goderich defenders, and
fired a high shot past the goalie's
blocker to give the Optimists a 3 -i
lead.
His second goal came with 6:44
left when a Centering pass went in
off either a Goderich defender or the
goaltender to close out the scoring.
, Arley Pautler got the assist on
Wingham's fourth goal.
Wallace eliminates
Belgrave PeeWees
The Belgrave PeeWees lost two
playoff games to Wallace lastweek,
the first by a 10-0 count and the
second 6-2.
The losses eliminated the
Belgrave lads froni further OMHA
play.
In last Wednesday night's match -
up, Belgrave took to the ice for its
first playoff game. As the score 10-0
indicates, the puck did not want to
stay out of the Belgrave net.
• Wallace jumped to a 3-0 first -
period lead and was ahead 7-0 after
two frames.
Last Thursday night saw the two
teams square off .one'e again. As in
the first encounter, the Belgrave
team played well, but still was
behind 2-0 after the first fraine.
• In the _second period., Brent
Robinson scored with"Corey 'Miran
and Doug Wilson assisting. Brad
Robinson then tied the game from
Peter Gusso.
P. Irwin leads
Belgrave Tykes
The Belgrave Tykes hosted
Wingham recently in the Belgrave
arena. However, the team proved to
be a poor host as it throttled its
opponents 7-1.
Peter Irwin scored once in the first
period for Belgrave and again early
in the second before Wingham
responded.
Belgrave's Matthew Beck had two
shots ring off the Wingham goalpost
before Irwin scored with two
minutes left in the middle frame.
Belgrave's Brian Sinclair scored
early in the third period with Irwin'
netting two more. With three
seconds left in the third period,
Sinclair, assisted by Irwin, beat the
Wingham goalie one final time for
the 7-1 win.
The entire Belgrave team, save
for goalie Tom Pfeiffer, had an
opportunity to play various
positions.
On the morning of Jan. 21, the
Blyth Tykes journeyed to Belgrave.
Blyth scored one unanswered goal
ircthe first frame.
Irwin scored twice early in the
second period for Belgrave. Sinclair,
assisted by speedskater Justin
Campbell, scored again for the home
team and with seven minutes to play
in the second period, Blyth's Jamie
Black skated by cousin Justin to
Score.
Irwin scored two more for
Belgrave with Blyth scoring once in
the third period. Belgrave's
defenseman Sinclair played his
strongest game of the season,
Making several nice passes and
rushes up the ice.
These two evenly -matched teams
had to play hard to keep their hands
and toes warm in the frosty
Belgrave arena. The final score was
5-3 for Belgrave.
However, the tie was short-lived
as Wallace quickly went ahead 3-2.
In the third period, 'Wallace scored
on a long, hard shot that spelled the
end for the Belgrave boys.
Atoms record
home -ice win
The Belgrave Novice team's
second game of the season on home
ice resulted, in a 5-0 win over
Bayfield.
With two minutes and five seconds
gonesin the first period, Eugene
• Fenton led the way to •the scoreboard
for Belgrave.
The two teams kept each other on
• their toes; but Belgrave's Fenton got
,sthrouglezthe Bayfield t,d'efetie to
• make it 2-0. It wasn't until the third
period when Andrew Potter scored,
assisted by Brent Robinson.
Bayfield came on strong, but not
strong enough as Fenton and Corey
Moran broke down their defenses to
add two more to the scoreboard,
making the final count 5-0 for
Belgrave.
A good game was played by all,
including Brian Marks, Robinson,
Eugene and Wayne Fenton, Aaron
• Coultes, Jim - and Chris Pildke,
