Madill Mustangs gear up for tourney, defeat Redmen — -- • - - Kevin Smith . • In many of the F. E. Madill Mus- tangs' victories this season, a cer- tain line has dominated the game and been the major factor in Madill's wins. Often, it has been the trio of Tom and Ken McDonald and Jason Kraemer which has sparked the Mustangs. Last Friday, however, Tom McDonald was unable to play due to injuries and Kraemer was slowed by the flu as Madill played on the road against the Clinton Redmen, But Madill's other two lines proved invaluable. The new line of Rod Cayley, Kevin deJong and Rod Crich produced all three of Madill's goals and a certain Blueline was instrumental in protecting the Mustangs' 3-2 victory in the dying seconds of the game. Madill opened the scoring early in the first frame with Cayley stuffing home a rebound for his first of two in the day. }Ii' second marker came late in the same period and was the result of a spectacular solo dash through the Clinton team. However, Madill again had a poor second period and before the end of the frame, found themselves tied at two on a questionable Clinton goal by Jeff Jewitt and 15 seconds later, the tying goal from Jewitt again. The one positive factor for Madill was the fact that it would start the third period with a two-man power- play advantage over the Redmen. Madill wasted no time in getting the winner as Culey won the draw back to Peter Strong on defense, who passed over to Terry Daer on the right side, who,- in turn, found Cayley at centre ice. Cayley quickly dished off to Crich, breaking over the left side of the Clinton line an4 Crich made a perfect cross -ice pass to deJong, who put away the game -winning - goal 12 seconds into the final frame. Tight checking dominated the remainder of the period until, with less than a minute left in the game and the, Redraen on a power play, Madill goalie Mario, 40tpin* mak four saves in a row before covering the puck and ending the flurry. However, a serum erupted behind the Mustang net and when all was said and done, Madill found them- sevies protecting a one -goal lead, two men down with 10 seconds left to play. Enter, stage right, the invaluable blueline! Because the Clinton defensemen became involved in the melee deep in the Mustang zone, the ensuing face off was moved outside the Madill blueline and away from Kotsanis. DeJong lost the draw, but when Clinton was forced to shoot the puck into the Madill zone, defenseman Steve Michie was waiting to ice tne puck and in the process, the victory. Madill's record is now four and two with three games remaining in the regular season. However, the team next sees action in the Mustang Invitational Hockey Tournament this Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 1 and 2. Game times are 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., 1 and 2:45 p.m. at both the Blyth and Wingham arenas to decide the tournament finalists. The consolation final will be played on Thursday in Wingham at 12:30 p.m., while the tournament final is slated for 2:30 p.m. Come out and cheer your team on to victory. • .4. 41••;, NA.
